Can't do the mayo. I've had it and it's not for me. I use butter and then sometimes I coat the outside of the bread with grated or shredded parm before cooking. Makes the most delicious crust.

posted by gutLOL. I still like the occasional Kraft Mac & Cheese, and hot dogs....never much of a ramen noodle fan.
Just never a fan of grilled cheese. Mom made it when she didn't have time to run to the store or wanted to slave over the kitchen. I like those kraft singles on my burger, but man they are crap....double for a sandwich entirely of them (except for the bread).
Oh, we don't do Kraft singles. We do real cheese ... usually cheddar.
posted by justincredibleWe never use Kraft singles for our grilled cheese.
Same. They barely melt. Cheese melts. They aren't cheese.
posted by OSHSolid choice. It's a go-to for us as well, it's fun to pass the "dip your sandwich in your soup" tradition to the kids.
It's fun to mix-up the grilled cheese too. Use mayo. Use multiple cheeses. Either way it goes, my wife does a great job when she doesn't burn it.
Yep. I like tomato and mayo on mine.

And they taste like vaguely cheese-flavored cardboard. If that's your grilled cheese sandwich, your grilled cheese sandwich sucks. Now, with higher-quality stuff, you're on to something.

We get real cheese from the deli in Marc's. It actually costs a little less. It's not individually wrapped, but I'll climb up that cross all day to avoid the pasteurized, processed, condensed cheese products that are.

posted by HereticFor me, pizza is the ultimate comfort food. Nothing else really compares. Been a while since I've had grilled cheese, but that's legit as well.
Pizza, cheeseburgers, and beer. An unbeatable combination.

Forgot about the rollmops! As a kid, that wasn't comfort food - that was "bonding with Dad on Saturday afternoon" food.

I had some comfort food tonight.
It's called chicken pot pie.
Another comfort food is pot roast with mashed potatoes and gravy.
Grilled cheese and tomato soup is good also. (Milk)
I don't consider pizza a comfort food.
p.s.: I'm a sucker for corn bread and butter.......especially with some chili.

Pizza is my all time comfort food. I do enjoy a good grilled cheese with butter and parm crust. I never heard of the mayo trick will have to try it next time. I also enjoy chicken or beef and noodle with mashed potatoes.

This thread reminded me of my mom's beef and noodles. I'll have to request she make that when we are visiting for Christmas. So damn good.

Per wikipedia:
Comfort food is food that provides a nostalgic or sentimental value to someone,[1] and may be characterized by its high caloric nature, high carbohydrate level, or simple preparation.[2] The nostalgia may be specific to an individual, or it may apply to a specific culture.[3]
It's an individual thing, so it can be considered comfort food.

Gotcha. I just see comfort food as, "Just the way '...' used to make it!" To me, pizza doesn't fall into that, unless you're talking homemade.

I dunno. If there was something special associated with ordering food, I could see that work.
For example, say someone's dad was a truck driver, and he was gone a lot, but when he was home on snowy nights, they always ordered a particular brand of pizza, that could turn out to be comfort food, because the person could associate the taste and smell of the pizza with the childhood feeling of their dad being home.

I think pizza qualifies - particularly the fond memories.
Most of the time in late fall thru winter, my mother would make one about every month - usually on Saturday evening around 9 PM, . I would be engrossed watching TV, and all of a sudden that wonderful smell would come into the living room. My parents would spread newspaper on the carpet and we'd all sit on the floor to eat it. I would savor mine and marvel at how it was made. Yeah, definitely comfort food
