Does football get started on time?

Spring football seems like a real stretch too - for a lot of reasons.  It sounds more like a way to placate people when you're delivering bad news.  Like Larry, the mayor Amity in Jaws:

SHOP OWNER: Are you going to close the beaches?
CHIEF BROODY: Yes...we are.

Uncomfortable silence, and then...

MAYOR LARRY: Only for 24 hours!  Only for 24 hours!

Even spring football seems like a stretch. They’re obviously just waiting for the vaccine. What are the odds that six months from now it’s been fully developed, released, and distributed?

I think we’ll have one in that time. But the distributing it and everyone receiving it and proving the numbers are going down with it is concerning.

Yeah, at least 2 weeks, maybe a month, after administration for the vaccine to protect you.  I'd guess optimistically players could be vaccinated by the end of March.  Too late to have a season at that point.

Football postponed until next year...in the fall.

If we're lucky, maybe we can have basketball this year.  The NBA has shown you can stop it from spreading with diligent protocols.

I feel like they may have exposed themselves to a huge liability.  Again, if it's not safe to play football, it's not safe to have students on campus.  They chose their statements poorly, ostensibly admitting they can't cocoon their campus.  And no one claims they could, but now that you've canceled sports for health/safety reasons...lawsuits are inevitable.

Not a surprise. I am pretty bummed.

I really liked the Pac12 releasing the medical documents and concerns. It seems like the unknowns, especially regarding potential heart impacts is what drove the decisions.

I think this whole mess (COVID, not necessarily the postponing of the season) is going to be what pushes the P5 conferences to split from the NCAA and form their own entity.

The smaller conferences are going to take an bath financially from this. I wouldn't be surprised to see some schools give up programs as a result.

I'd be interested to know how much the average student's tuition is going to subsidize sports.  It's hard to place a value on what football/basketball do as far as providing opportunities to fundraise from alumni.

But you've got all those scholarships and big coaching salaries on sports that lose money.  All of them, including football even at schools in the MAC.

"The NCAA reported in 2016 that the average Division I school lost $12.6m annually on athletics if they don’t have a football team, and $14.4m if they do."

OK, so that's the average.  $14.4M across, let's say 20k students is $770 per student per year.  I think all-in-all that's probably a decent investment for the student.  But with so many students struggling financially, that $4k over 5 years is pretty significant.

I read a book on the financials of athletics a few years ago. It varies per school/state, but I think most of the big boys forked their athletics programs financials away from the university.

In other words, they're completely separate pools of money.

I'm not sure if they can piggy-back off of tuition fees even if they wanted to.

I disagree.  Finances/budgets are fungible. I don't know the accounting rules, but I doubt there are any laws preventing schools from funding athletics - a huge part of the cost being scholarship money - from student tuition.  The only open question, really, is what athletic programs contribute to non-athletic alumni donations and recruiting.  I tend to think that's fairly marginal.

Big 12 will continue on with the season. Wonder if they, ACC, and SEC have a successful season without incident, it’ll make the Big10/Pac really regret not trying.

I mean what would be the point in playing in spring if these 3 divisions successfully play fall? Would be a waste of time

So, is Mr. Big 10 Commish gonna let his son continue to play for whichever of the two Mississippi schools he attends? Because, man, if he presides over fucking over every single Big 10 fall sport athlete while allowing his kid to play, I'd hope everyone with the capacity to do so just goes scorched earth on him.

Just can’t get over what a dumb decision that was by the B1G. To not even attempt to play? Makes no sense. ESPECIALLY when about half your teams were publicly calling for a regular season.

And yeah, if the other 3 conferences have a successful season...which, they will, because literally every other sport has been doing it for the last 3 months...then they’re going to look really stupid for a very long time.

MLB?

I’m literally watching an MLB game right now

They had a few hiccups, but outside of the Marlins and cardinals the rest of the teams are fine

What’s the deal with the Cardinals anyways? Do new players keep testing positive? Is/has most of their lineup tested positive by now?

A very, very weak decision for sure. I'd go far as to call it wimpy if potential COVID lawsuits were part of the consideration. I don't care for the SEC, but I give them and the other leagues a lot of respect for not only moving forward, but doing it with enthusiasm and confidence.

Horrible look by the Big Ten. (as punishment, I refuse to use their stupid B1G logo). What can you expect from a conference that calls itself the Big Ten and has 14 members.

The Big Ten continues with its shenanigans.  Now they're floating the idea of starting in November.  If that ends up happening, what a total debacle.  What exactly will have changed between late September and November that would have justified the decision that starting at the former was a risk to everyone's life, but during the latter it is no problem.  What a bunch of jokers.

21 days for a positive case is ridiculous, but this is all better than nothing.
