I'm not looking for your favorites songs, just clever, funny, haunting, etc lyrics from songs you like.

I was listening to some old rap from my high school days (Mi Casa, Method Man) on my ride home last night and heard the following (Belly approved) lyric and chuckled a bit:

It's a cold world, better pack your own heat.

One of my favorite lyrics from Jason Isbell (If It Takes a Lifetime):

Man is the product of all the people that he ever loved

And it don't make a difference how it ended up

If I loved you once my friend, oh, I can do it all again

If it takes a lifetime

And just like Humpty Dumpty
You're gonna fall when the stereos pump me
I like to rhyme
I like my beats funky
I'm spunky. I like my oatmeal lumpy
I'm sick wit dis, straight gangsta mack
But sometimes I get ridiculous
I'll eat up all your crackers and your licorice

The Humpty Dance (Digital Underground)

I dare you to find another song where someone will eat BOTH your crackers and your licorice.

#1

'Lucky me, working down in the gravel pit

Moving rocks, on a big dinosaur I sit

Mr. Slate gets mad and he throws a fit

Pull the birdies tail, everybody know it's time to quit" ("Bedrock Anthem" - Weird Al)

#2

"Little old lady got mutilated late last night" - a lot of alliteration by Warren Zevon, "Werewolves of London"

Jimmy in the back with a pocket of high.

If you listen close, you can hear him cry.

Movie quote, but putting it here:

  • Hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing. And no good thing ever dies.
  • Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

Photographs show the laughs

Recorded in between the bad times

Happy sailors, dancing on a sinking ship.

"Flashback Blues", John Prine (or pretty much anything else he's written).

I love old blues lyrics:

Born under a bad sign
I been down since I begin to crawl
If it wasn't for bad luck,
I wouldn't have no luck at all

Three O'clock Blues:

Goodbye everybody,
I believe this is the end.
Oh, goodbye everybody,
I believe this is the end.
I want you to tell my baby,
Tell her please, please forgive me,
Forgive me for my sins.

Stormy Monday:

They call it stormy Monday, but Tuesday's just as bad
Wednesday's worse, and Thursday's also sad

Yes the eagle flies on Friday, and Saturday I go out to play
Eagle flies on Friday, and Saturday I go out to play
Sunday I go to church, then I kneel down and pray

Love everything about all the lyricsc on Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here."  I interpret this song one of two ways, and each way is very powerful.  1) They are singing to their younger selves, wishes they were here now, seeing the journey.  2) A call to Syd Barrett (stoned for good on acid).

I thought the story was Sid walked into the recording and said, that song is deep, and they said, well, it's about you

Well he came down to dinner in his sunday best.

Excitable boy they all said

Then he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest

Excitable boy they all said. Well he's just an excitable boy
