Cancer sucks

Last week my grandma was diagnosed with lung cancer. She got PET scan results today and they found spots on her liver and spine, so it has already started to spread. We don't know what stage it's in yet. My grandma, being the absolute boss that she is, is in good spirits. She said she'd be willing to give experimental treatments a go, and that even if it didn't work for her it might help someone else in the future. My grandfather died of lung cancer 20 years ago this November, so this is a double whammy for me.

Sorry to hear this, Justin. My older sister is a breast cancer survivor. Said if it comes back she won't go through the chemo again. My younger nephew (just turned 40) had melanoma, which they also caught at the right time. You'd think they could find a cure for this shit but cures don't make money

Sorry Justin. Hate it for you.

My dad got skin cancer in 2007, all gone, as of right now. It's the genetic kind, so that's no fun for my future.

If she wants to look at experimental, check out this place: http://www.genzada.com/. Supposedly they have the biggest cancer research breakthroughs in 40+ years. I only know of it because I have worked nearby them. They just built and bought new spaces for their treatments. If I'm not mistaken, it's no-cost too.

This happened to my brother several years ago. Diagnosed with Stage 4 and it had broke through the wall, meaning it had spread to lymph nodes, spine and liver. He's in his second year of remission now and still going strong. Stage 4 is not the death sentence that it used to be.
I'm very sorry this tragedy is hitting your family. Seems like there isn't a family not affected by it in one way or another. Faith, Hope and Love goes a long way!

“Fuck cancer” is one of the few statements that is universally supported.

I had all 4 grandparents two years ago. Now down to just 1. 2/3 from cancer, the other from Alzheimer’s.

Terribly sorry to hear about your grandmother.  My only advice is treasure the time you have with her.

Don't have much experience with cancer as a killer on either side of my family, at least under the age of 80.  Dementia seems to be the most common thing I've witnessed in my older relatives.

I spent about 4 hours with her this morning/afternoon, and we're going to dinner tonight. She's definitely in great spirits. My aunt is working on setting up an appointment to get a second opinion with the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus.

Alzheimer's has the same "Fuck it" sentiment for me. Happened to my dad and his mom, meaning that genetics says I'm probably pretty likely to be getting it down the road. One of my friends has a brother working in medicine in the field of trying to find a cure for it; I've told her that, down the road, if his team comes up with anything, I'd likely have no trouble being a test subject.

My grandma met with a specialist yesterday and is a great candidate for drug treatment called Keytruda. It's an immunotherapy that usually responds well to her specific type of cancer. Given the circumstances we're all pretty happy with this recent development.

It does, yes.

My wife's grandmother was diagnosed with the same a couple months ago.  It has spread to her brain and is causing a once-lovely woman to occasionally get unspeakably mean.  My wife has become her daily caregiver to avoid sending her to a facility (other than for the occasional respite care).

I'm sorry to hear that it's hitting you guys, too.  Do your best to make the moments with her enjoyable for her, so she can hang onto them.

Fuck cancer.

Sorry Justin, Prayers for your grandmother

After my 2nd year of teaching my early 60’s grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer on Mother’s Day .....her daughters couldn’t miss much work so I took care of her the next month as she passed before Father’s Day. It was awful and her coworkers (cabinet making factory) would come in as grown men to visit and leave there crying. It was a bad time but I am glad I was able to be with her.

(wipes tears)

Jan 29th 2013 My father in law was rushed to hospital....very late stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Was out on vent later the very next day. Died Feb 2nd......Feb 28th 2013 my mother in law, same damn thing, same diagnosis and passed away on March 3rd.

My best friend at school...her sister diagnosed stage 3 in early May (46 years old).....passed away in late August leaving her husband and 3 young sons.

cancer definitely sucks

Just read about this. Pretty sure the type/stage he has means he won’t be around much longer. Terrible news indeed.

Isn’t pancreatic cancer essentially a death sentence?
