Cancer? He might know he doesn't have much time left.

i said this friday to some buddies. seems like his goal was to re-unite the empire that Nicholas II gave up, and he's decided the time is now to get it done for some reason.

I hope not. That could bring Nukes into play if that’s his rationale for doing this.

Guys like Putin are dangerous if they’ve already accepted their fate.  Hitler knew somewhere deep inside that he was screwed after Stalingrad.  He knew he wouldn’t survive and so he was willing to take anyone down with him.  I hope that’s not what we’re dealing with here. However based on the catastrophe of his military plan thus far, it looks like we are not dealing with a rationale man.

Lets just hope we can scare off Belarus from joining the war.

The timing is very interesting, indeed.  Had he done it this winter, he could have brought Europe to it's knees, Mr. Freeze-style.

What we have now in Europe is something similar to the "phoney war" after the invasion of Poland in 1939.  We don't do official "declarations" of war today but make no mistake the West has now responded to the invasion of Ukraine by openly engaging in acts of war with Russia without direct military engagement.

I guess. I'd more say this is a chapter of the Cold War and post Cold War playbook with Russia and actions they took in Eastern Europe and our counter efforts with Poland, Czech, Chechnya, Georgia, and Crimea.

Or, I guess this is more like the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. But, not sure we have CIA officers just throwing out cash and missiles.

You can site all these post WWII historical events and downplay but none of them are remotely close equating to what is going on currently.  I think you know and don't guess.

The "phoney war" lasted around 8 months.  During that period of time if you were dealing with a reasonable adversary total war could have been averted.  That was not the case then and may not be the case now.

We need to be honest the events occurring in Europe today have not been seen since WWII.

Also just to add the USA was not involved in an entangling alliance in 1939.

For as large as it is, the Russian military seems to really suck.  What a two-bit operation.

Saw a news report that a 40 mile long caravan of Russian troops and tanks were heading to Kyiv.  If these countries in the UN cared, it would seem easy with todays technology to just bomb that caravan to stop this shit.

About as easy as it would be for a lunatic to order the city vaporized.

Not everything is a WWII comparison there. I get what you are saying, but ignores or downplays more recent history on eastern Europe directly.

And then......please do tell what Russia would do?

Not "seen since" and "similar" indicates that.

This 40 mile convoy from what I am reading sounds more like a traffic jam.

Well I hate that seen since because it is wrong. The media and folks are throwing those words around without context as usual.

The breakup of Yugoslavia was a larger and more wide ranging conflict.

I'd also say the Soviet invasions of the 50s and 60s in eastern Europe were also larger, just under the Iron Curtain.

There is also the whole standoff in Germany during the entire Cold War, that included numerous incursions and invasions in the early Cold War days.

The breakup of Yugoslavia is the only post WW2 event in Europe that would come close to the death and destruction that is going on today.  A violent internal separation of a nation on many ethnic lines.  Quite different than Ukraine.

The Hungarian uprising was put down quickly with little loss of life and property.  The West was mostly hands off.  Same with  Czechoslovakia.  Not the case in Ukraine.

Go read Putin's speech.  He has made his intentions quite clear.  This has caused a huge shift in the European mindset.

Oh so we should worry about what they "would do"?  Right now they are invading a country and killing people.  Not worried about that?

Sounds on par with people like you, lead from behind.  All this BS about sanctions and crap.  ALL OF THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE WEEKS AGO AND LIKELY PREVENT THIS.

But hey WTF, lets have a fucking war and people like us are paying $5 a gallon in gas and just lost 20% in the stock market.  You need to STFU.,
