It doesn't have to be either/or. You can help your classmates, be involved in politics and voice your opinions.

This goes without saying, and the OP was just pointing out that there are better ways to voice your opinion than walking out of class in the middle of a school day. I don't see how that could've been misunderstood.

How about Baltimore public schools spending over 100K to send students to DC?

That's money well spent - let them march, riot and tear up someone else's city

Justin, I apologize if this was posted in the wrong place.  Suppose it belongs under politics.

This brought the lawlz when I read about it. Clean up your own murderous city (with pistols) before you start complaining about something else. Morons

Far better than using it to fix buildings with no heat.

I fully support the kids right to protest. I also fully support the right of the schools to punish them for it.  Do I think more gun control laws are stupid? Yes. Do I think we should protect kids with our guns? Yes.

There is another walk out scheduled for April.  I will be pulling my 8th grader iou off school that day and taking him to the gun range to teach him real gun control, which is of course hitting a target.

I'd say the key would be to include those in authority and not simply protest/walk out against their wishes. Since it's a school where those in authority do have legit control (in theory) over the kids, going against them and not working with them could lead to suspensions, detentions or whatever.

Really, your post doesn't make much sense. The students aren't protesting against those people in authority like they would be in the examples you gave. They're posting against something (shootings) that would also affect those same people in authority, so it kind of comes down to whether those people in authority support their protest. If they do, cool; if they don't, it's up to the kids as to whether they're willing to accept the consequences.

So the students aren't really protesting and they don't have the right to protest. The administrators are protesting by making students stand outside.

They only encourage involvement when it advances liberal views.

If students want to 'walkout' or protest, do it on their own time.  Parents pay for the education, do not interfere with that during normal hours.

Would the feeling be the same if the cause were anti-abortion?

Mine would be, absolutely. If you want to protest do it on your own "time".

Imagine what most of our bosses would say if the most of the office walked outside and protested while on the clock.

Some bosses would be 'ok' with it.

Some bosses would just dock everyone's pay that went out.

Some bosses would fire every person that walked out.

The kids have to understand that there are possible repercussions when you "skip out" on the 'work' you are supposed to be doing on someone elses "dime".

For those calling for suspensions, did that really happen where you were from (for missing school)? I left school early on multiple occasions and never got more than a slap on the wrist. Got caught playing hooky for two days and had to meet with the principal. Why would you get a suspension for skipping half a class?

I understand the point, but the difference here is that (in public schools at least), we're the owners.

Easily at my school.  Did you go to a small school?

Yes. May also have benefited from being an athlete with good grades.

I went to the school district next to you (I think, Champion)... nobody gave a shit what you did if you had good grades, played sports, and weren't a fuck up. That said, if you protested this there, you'd be made fun of forever.

Hell, in high school, we kids loved any opportunity to get out of class for a bit. Fire drills, pep rally's, smoking a cig between classes, etc. So, I can't blame a good amount of these kids who are doing this just to get out of class for a bit. You KNOW there's kids who are doing it for precisely this reason.

I don't really care. At least they're not destroying property, intimidating teachers, or teachers hitting kids over the head with bike locks and so on.

I do think that this was more important to people on Twitter and Facebook than anybody else.

That’s correct. Sounds accurate for us, too, but I also agree that a lot of kids probably joined in to get out of class for a few minutes. What years were you there?

Go get 'em kids, bans are definitely the way to go on the gun issue.
