Quarantine Purchases?

Starting a new thread to help our Dear Leader.

As a fortunate one to not be adversely affected during these times, I've definitely been saving money. BUT also spending, not frivolously though. I've been buying a lot of household related items that I've been putting off for a long time.

So far I have purchased:

A 2nd Apple TV for the living room. We use it for home workouts, before I was just bringing in the one from the bedroom.

500gb external SSD (Samsung T5). Nice little device, external storage has come a long way. Extremely fast. I bought it to back up my current laptop which is on it's last leg. New computer coming eventually.

Desk for bedroom, fake wood, looks real, hairpin legs. Apt Deco delivery. It's a week late.

Screen cleaning kit for all TVs, computer screens, etc.

Laptop riser stand

Cord management channels to hide all cables and all installation hardware. I'm waiting on the paint and/or code from my super so I can get started

Velcro cable ties to organize all things cable

Several higher quality power strips, braided cables, flat plugs for easier concealment

Next up:

Desk chair. May go the "task chair" route to save space. Also not sure if I want wheels. Wood floors, don't want to deal with fucking them up and/or getting a mat.

New iMac. I desperately need a new personal computer. I can't do much on my work one aside from work, it's very locked down. This will also act as a 2nd monitor for work purposes.

Blinds and curtains for bedroom. Current setup is terrible, probably go faux wood. Hoping it blocks enough light to not need actual curtains.

Pans. I need a new set, maybe 2-3. Current ones are college level destroyed.

Ladder or step ladder, something I can reach the ceilings with but also stow in a closet.

Thrilling stuff, I KNOW!

I spent a Sephora gift card on Summer Fridays CC Me serum, Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Acid Cloud serum, and a Mount Lai jade gua sha facial tool.

That's been the extent of my spending. I do have some cook books, adult coloring books and colored pencils in my Amazon cart, and I'm keeping my eye out for some candle sales.

Oh and I've been tipping my regular bartender via Venmo twice a week.

I'm thinking about buying some books with the money I've been saving on bar tabs and Touchtunes. I normally just use Kindle Unlimited, but they don't have several of the titles I'm interested in.

I've spent a lot of money on my new turntable setup plus new records in the last few weeks.

I bought a couple puzzles. That’s about it. Trying to be really frugal, considering I don’t have a job anymore. I was just about to pull the trigger on a new Scotty Cameron putter right before the pandemic got crazy, but that $400 will be spent elsewhere.

Puzzles are in short supply, luckily we found a couple.  On Amazon’s top ten search list, 9 of the items were hygiene/sanitization related; # 7 was puzzles.

Door knobs for all of the interior doors. The finish on the originals has worn over the 40+ years of use. Not something I care about but something a potential buyer might.

Having groceries delivered for the first time ever. Was going for pickup but all of the slots were filled. Trying everything possible to minimize human interaction.

Bought a car yesterday for my daughter as she graduates with her doctor of pharmacy and heads to residency.  Other than that, loaded up on wine and beer; the spirits cupboards were already pretty full.

Yeah, we've spent a ton on booze as well.

Will we see a huge spike in alcoholism with this stupid lock-down?

Food and booze. Spent $100 ($150 then a $50 gift card) at Home Depot for some paint and other stuff.

I've actually been drinking less. I used to go out for trivia every Wednesday, and then there was always a mix of Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday (yes, sometimes all three please don't judge me) on the weekends.

I've had one bottle of wine and three beers since March 15th.

Not really much recently other than food. Really, casual home stuff like food, toiletries and the like have been my main purchases, where I try to be organized enough in my purchases where I only have to go into stores every couple weeks or so to reload on stuff like veggies and then restock the freezer to make up for whatever I've been eating.

Other than that, I did order Horizon Zero Dawn for the PS4. Was playing it for free via PlayStation Now, but it was getting taken down from that service in a couple days and there was no way I'd have it finished by then and I was able to get it for around $10 on Amazon, so I snagged it.

But overall, being frugal. No real need to be, but can't really think of anything overly essential I need. My entire existence is based around entertainment and I have enough games, books, movies and music to keep me entertained indefinitely. In a few weeks, might order a few more films to add to my gangster/mob/crime collection I've been building over the past year or two.

Oh, yeah. I did buy an Xbox One X at the beginning of this. I haven't been playing a ton, but it is a nice change of pace when I'm bored of reading or watching tv.

This made me realize that I'd really like to upgrade my work machine.  I like the NUC I've been using, but it's too silly to use while traveling.  Plus the video card is integrated Intel dogshit.  Looking at one of the performance laptops from System76, since I already use Linux as my daily driver (which has actually become a MUCH better experience than I ever had with Windows or Mac).  If not that, I'll probably look for a lightly used Razer Blade.

Other than that, I'd like to get a standing desk for my work station.  Tired of sitting down all the time, and the last time I had a standing desk, my productivity went up.

As for what I've actually spent money on, I finally bought a meerschaum pipe from a friend's online estate sale.  His grandfather had well over 100 pipes, and while my friend is a pipe smoker, it's just more than he would ever use.  Since I've been looking for a decent meerschaum that didn't break the bank, it was perfect, and it'll allow me to have a few bowls consecutively without risking cracking the briar.

So just go to that link to Amazon, check out, and I'm good? It's ok if the items are already in the cart?
