Grocery Shopping

How did you shop before Covid? How have you shopped during Covid? How will you shop after Covid?

We used to go down every aisle grab what we needed and a few impulse buys as well. With Covid we switched grocery stores (Meijer to Kroger) because their online ordering system is so much better. We have done all our grocery shopping online and curbside pickup.

When we return to normal I think we will go back to shopping in person. It’s nice and saves time but I still like to pick out my fruit and meat. I also like to see if there’s any new items or flavors to choose from.

Only difference is I use a mask now. I didn’t really take my kids to the store if I could avoid but I’m definitely not now. Try to be respectful of other people and maintain distance. I’m the type who goes a few times through the week only buying a little bit at a time. I could never do big shopping that’d last more than a few days. For a while though I was trying to avoid that and only go once a week. But I’m back to going 2-3 times a week now.

We used to go to the store together. Now only one of us goes into the store.

My wife does all of the grocery shopping. We used click list a couple times, but found it to be lacking most times. We'd have ingredients for 3-4 meals and they'd always be out of at least one ingredient for each, but we still got all of the other ingredients and had 3-4 incomplete meals we couldn't cook without making another trip. She's back to shopping normally at this point.

Two differences, one small and one large.

SMALL: Wear a mask while shopping.

LARGE: Used to make 2-3 small trips to the store per week, just grabbing a basket and picking up stuff I needed or was at least worried about getting low on. Got in and out in 5-10 minutes unless I had to wait to get a U-Scan machine. Now, I aim for one trip a month and buy everything I might need during that trip, usually hitting both my town's Kroger and a near-by Meijer.

We are now using curbside pickup only. It has worked out well, although there are always some items we can’t get, but that’s because the store is out and we wouldn’t be able to get them even if we were to go inside.  I don’t think we are going to go into a grocery store for a long long time, and this includes any kind of dollar store.  The stores we use for pickup are Giant Eagle and Buehlers.

I have’t changed much. No mask requirement so I don’t, but I make a list and only get what’s on it, based on the current sales. We live less than 1/2 a mile from the store so I go a couple times a week, but don’t get near anyone else while there and use self checkout when I can. When things get near expiration they mark them down so I like going to get the deals that wouldn’t show up on online ordering.

I've ordered delivery a few times, but when ordering meat Amazon usually makes the choices in whole pounds (and recently starting at 2-3 lbs in some cases).

So basically I end-up going twice a week.  And then about once a week to the convenience store for something I ran out of or forgot, or some beer.  I wear a mask.  No big deal and I'm in and out pretty quick usually.

I am actually thinking about getting a separate freezer and stocking it up with fish/chicken/beef so I have a few months of food when the next apocalypse comes.  I wouldn't be looking to re-freeze something from the store, so would have to buy already frozen from somewhere.

Definitely get a freezer. We have a large freezer in our garage with enough meat to last us several weeks without access to a grocery store

We also have a quarter beef coming our way in August.

before: The Mrs. would do the primary trip once a week varying between Meijer/Kroger/Wal-Mart. I'd go to a local regional chain closer to home once or twice a week if we needed something.

Now: I'm doing all the grocery shopping once a week. One week at the local store, the next week at one of the larger chains.

For sure. I think ours was less than $100, and it has come in very handy during these times.

My wife did a pickup order at Kroger today. She's been waiting for over an hour and a half and still hasn't had them brought out to the car yet.

^^^ Sorry for the bad experience. Maybe it is a Kroger thing, but we have had very good success with curbside grocery for like a dozen times.  Mostly it is with Giant Eagle. We actually went into Sam’s Club a few days ago and were very impressed with what they are doing to keep everyone safe. Hope your wife has your groceries by now!

It was an hour and 40 minutes when they finally came out, just a few minutes after I posted. And they didn't have or substitute our main side dish (tater tots) for dinner tonight so she had to run to another one on the way home.

There is a dedicated pickup location about 20 minutes away that she will use from now on.

I am way too picky not to hand select my food to do the curbside service

I can't believe she waited that long. Would have said fuck this after 10 minutes of waiting.

She was not in a pleasant mood when she got home, but she was basically stuck in a long queue of cars for more of it so she couldn't really leave.

We use curbside now at King Soopers (Kroger is parent). They give us a 2 hour pickup window, I think, and it's been ready everytime by the front end of that window. I'm not positive because my wife has always gone. She also runs in and grabs the frozen items herself at that time.
