Retro Video Games

I recently got into collecting retro video games (NES and Sega Genesis, so far).

Anyone still have any old systems and games? If you do and are interested in selling I might be a buyer, fyi.

My current collection is pretty small, but I'm planning on thinning out some of my record collection to help fund new video game purchases.

What are your favorite games and systems from the Gamecube/PS2/Xbox and before era?

Only about 16-17 years old but we never got rid or upgraded from our Wii. Kids nowadays definitely consider it retro.

Our 9 year old nephews want to visit often from 2 hours away and them wanting to play the Wii is a big factor (probably the biggest lol)

I loved the old Atari stuff

I wish I still had the old Atari!

But I've still got my SNES and a handful of its games. Every few years I'll turn it on and play the Zelda or Monopoly. Oh and the Gaia.

I have a PS2, PS3, PS4, PS5, Sega Genesis, Sega Dreamcast, NES, OG GameBoy, and recently parted ways with my Apple IIe.

Illusion of Gaia? I had that back in the day. Did play it a few years back via emulation. Take out the really long raft trip with just the main guy and the princess chick that never seemed to end and it was pretty killer.

My son is really into Sonic right now. So we recently played the original and second one on the Switch. Then he got the latest one for Christmas and I have no fucking idea what’s going on. Sonic and Shadow Generations I guess.

Still play everything? Favorite games for each?

Yep, that's the one. I don't know why I love that particular game so much lol! But I will forget about it for a while and then I will obsessively play it.

I'd like one of those consoles that has like....everything. But I don't know what's legit or not.

After watching Running with Speed, I really want to play Mario 3.

Sonic would be fun too. I was a major Sega fanboi.

I also have a few year old Mac Mini collecting dust. I'm sure there's a way I can make it happen with that.

Play them all, but not as much as I did 2-3 years ago.

Favorite games for the retro systems

PS2 - Kingdom Hearts 2

PS3 - Red Dead Redemption

Genesis - NHL 95

DreamCast - NFL 2K2

NES - First Zelda or Super Dodgeball

GameBoy - Tetris (I could still play that for hours)

I've got a Raspberry Pi with RetroPi installed and after fiddling with that for a while it made me want to actually start collecting the physical devices and games.

From beginning to now for systems I own or have owned. Just a few or more favorites for each.

Atari 2600: Adventure

Atari 7800: Uh...maybe Robotron 2084

NES: Legend of Zelda and Zelda II, Dragon Warrior III and IV, Tecmo Super Bowl, Faxanadu, Castlevania III, Super Mario 2 and 3, Bionic Commando, The Guardian Legend, Kirby's Adventure

Computers in general: Doom II

Genesis (didn't own it, but a friend did in college AND I did buy Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the 360): Sonic the Hedgehog (all four on this system), Phantasy Star IV

SNES: Zelda: Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III (sixth one, really; but only third ported to America), Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island, Super Mario RPG, Earthbound

PlayStation: Alundra (best Zelda-clone I've played), Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Spyro the Dragon trilogy, Final Fantasy VII, Star Ocean: The Second Story, Medal of Honor, Silent Hill

PlayStation 2: Dragon Quest VIII, GTA: San Andreas, NCAA Football 06, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 4

XBox 360: Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, GTA V, Mass Effect Trilogy, Rayman Legends and Origins, Trials Evolution

3DS/DS (since the 3DS is backwards compatible with the DS): Super Mario 3D Land, Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds and Ocarina of Time 3D

PlayStation 4: Assassin's Creed stuff (mainly played the remastered ones from the past generation), Bloodborne, Elden Ring, Hollow Knight, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Trials Rising, Witcher 3, Yakuza 0

I don’t have any of my old stuff.

My friend recently hosted a Halo 2 20th anniversary tournament. It was fun as it brought out all the old pros. Prize money was just under 100k. They did the tournament in a really fun way by going out and finding 100s of old Xbox’s and 100s of the same exact Tube tv so it was like playing it as a kid again. My friend was a pro during the Halo / Halo 2 days then helped start MLG. He now runs tournaments and does announcing for various games.

If you have a game you really want he can probably find it La copy for you.

Got rid of an old atari system and dozens of game about 5 years ago.  It still worked, sort of.  The joysticks were notoriously fragile, and I never looked for replacements.  Plus I would have needed to find an adapter for modern tvs.

I still occasionally play some of the old 2600 games on emulators.

Have looked at a few 2600 emulators/cabinets that have like 100 of the best games.  Maybe some day...

It was crowd funded to. He’s a pretty big name in the esports world so he was able to bring in some sponsors and then all the donations they got streaming it over 3 days made up the rest of it.

Loved that game.  I was terrible, but will be my first purchase for my game room if and when I finally buy a new place.

RetroRick is a great collector YouTube channel.

"Nintendo Quest" was a really good documentary about a guy getting the entire NES collection

Nice!  His video yesterday was great, breaking down his store's sales for the year.  He has a nice following but to do over a million in sales from a retro game store is super impressive.

Wow, I haven't watched that one yet. Probably pays to have such a large online following. I would detour a few hours to check out Game Point if I was traveling that way.
