Better hang on to your guns.

What guns?  I don't have any guns.

Libertarian socialism is ultimately just the rejection of private or personal property outside your own body.  It draws its reasoning from the notion that if you go back far enough, everything can be traced back to property that was seized or claimed without any willing exchange.

But the interesting thing that struck me was the description of all the events being decided democratically.  THAT is not in line with libertarian ideology, whether it leans socialist or capitalist.

Odd that a movement that chose a name with "Anarchist" would support something that pushes "democratic" anything.  Those terms are mutually exclusive.

The libertarians that I follow have been handling Amash at a bit of a distance lately. I wonder how they'll feel about this:

I think that whole topic is a circus, so I generally avoid it when I can.

I’m at a dinner with Jim Jordan the other night.  He tells this story of a subcommittee hearing involving the CEO of major drug company and one of their drugs that has saved hundreds of thousands of lives.  The CEO is being grilled by the dems including the radical Tlaib from Michigan. When it is Jordan’s turn, the conversation goes like this:

Jordan – how many years have you spent developing this drug?

CEO – 11 years.

Jodan – how much did you spend on research and development of this drug, and testing and clinical trials?

CEO – $1.1 BILLION

Jordan – how many lives has this drug saved to date?

CEO- probably several hundred thousand lives.

Then,

Tlaib – that drug belongs to the public.

You can see why there is literally no negotiating with these radical leftists; they are in another world.  They are hostile to fellow Americans, they are hostile to our economic system, they are hostile to our freedom and our way of life.  If they keep it up, things are going to get ugly.

The complete lack of even a basic understanding of economics for most people is just sad.

Single-payer doesn't do anything magical to reduce costs, it simply uses monopoly power to dictate prices, which for doctors and pharma means less profit.

What inevitably happens - and I like Jim Jordan, although sometimes he does a little too much grandstanding - is less money is necessarily spent on research, and less promising areas are abandoned.  This means the govt, which already funds a good chunk of research, is going to be funding more and more.  It will make medical insurance look lower, but only because the govt now has to raise a bunch of taxes to fund research.

And as a general rule of thumb, the govt is really bad at allocating resources.  This is proven over and over.  The ultimate result is less value out of our already overvalued healthcare dollar.

The school's students (and apparently at least one faculty member) are bordering on insane.

Having said that, so is a suit for $11 million for libel and slander against a mom-and-pop bakery in Oberlin, OH.

This whole story just reeks of stupid.

I was hoping this would get its own thread, $11M was for the verdict, added another $33M in punitive, but I think that might get capped at twice the verdict.

Bill Maher, again, talking about how the far left is becoming a real danger and threat to the Democrat agenda.

It's as if liberals are slowly starting to realize that their lies and deception have worked too well, and it might start costing them elections.  Republicans could slaughter the Dems in the next election, except they're too dumb and stubborn to cede fight on social issues they've already lost

Even dumber.

It's a fucking mom-and-pop bakery in Oberlin, Oh.  This isn't the inventor of the croughnut in NYC.  The harm to their business has probably not even been in the mid-six figures.  And I don't care if a gorilla was trained to fuck them in the ass, $33MM is ridiculous.

And of course, there's the fact that Oberlin's snowflakes have such hair triggers that they're practically begging to be the object of widespread skullfuckery.

Maher is a brash asshole, and I disagree with him a lot, but I think he might be right here.  In an effort to pander to the extreme left, the Democratic Party may be losing a chunk of moderates.

Then again, they may be playing the long game, too, by appealing to a younger population who hasn't lived through an era in which "socialism" incited fear and opposition on a military conflict level.

Actually, I think his persona on Real Time has largely been an act.  He puts on the pretense his audience, and for that matter HBO, expect.

But, at heart, he's always been a Libertarian.  And I honestly think he's in a crisis of conscience that he just can't keep endorsing all this bullshit.  It's been easy and convenient to attack Republicans for their ignorant social views.  But that was just fodder - Maher, and even Pelosi, recognize the real threat to Democracy is coming from the far left.

I believe he's admitted to being something of a libertarian ... or at least something resembling it.  If I had to guess, I'd think of him as more of an anarcho-socialist, but then, I generally avoid his show.  That personality, whether real or contrived, just doesn't appeal to me that much.

But yeah, I definitely think he's one of the ones who generally sides left that sees the inherent problem with what "left" is starting to mean.

The damages are $11M, the additional is punishment

No, I get it.  I know the $33MM wasn't for damages.

The $11MM is ridiculous enough, though.  I don't care how old the business has been around, you can't tell me there's evidence of $11MM worth of damages to a mom-and-pop bakery in little Oberlin, OH.  I don't care if it's 140 years old or 1 year old.

Having said that, the school brought this on themselves.  It's one thing if the students are passing out something like this, but the admin was practically begging to be sued, and given how "cash poor" they're claiming to be now, it probably would have been worth it to show a little discretion beforehand.

Oberlin will just raise cost of tuition. Might even raise it to the point of prohibiting a small % of enrollment.

It wasn’t just a ‘mom and pop’ bakery.  They had contracts with the college and my guess is there was a substantial business relationship involved.  This is no doubt why the radical faculty members were so involved; I am sure they wanted the college to sever all ties due to the (fake) racism.

The bulk of their business came from food service contracts with the college. They documented their losses at trial at close to $6 million.

Okay, that's still surprising, but less so with an arrangement with the college.

But if they documented their losses at $6MM, where did $11MM come from, since that was the amount for damages and not part of the punitive kicker?

I dunno...unless they counted potential future loses in there too. No idea if that's a thing or not.
