So, those dudes trapped under water in a cheap sub while looking for the Titanic...

Some people have been down to the Titanic over 30 times.

They are still thousands, if not millions, of trips away from being safe enough to mainstream.  How many years did it take airlines to get there?  And decades after air travel became safer than autos, you still had multiple crashes ultimately ending the Concorde.

Then you have cruise ships.  And the last 5 years have made me seriously question EVER going on a large commercial boat.  You'd think river boats would be the safest, but they might even be the worst.

That's definitely not entry-level, but I'd also argue it's not the high-end luxury market.  Just about any decent new vehicle without a lot of options now run close to $40k.

Cars are also probably the biggest purchase most people spend well beyond their means, because they don't save up $60k, they just stretch to come up with $500 per month.  Which really goes to the point I was making earlier that $50k is within reach for a lot of people if that's their lifetime dream purchase.  Someone ready to retire could decide "you know what, I'll work one more year so I can take that space trip".

$500 a month? That $60,000 truck is a $1000 a month for 5 years…like $835 for 72 months

But yeah they are everywhere and people come up with it…I guess

I have a 2014 Ford Focus. Its completely paid off, and I don't drive. I have considered selling it, but we definitely need 2 cars enough times that cannot justify it. It has 55k miles. And at least 10k of that is back and forth between Chicago/Toledo and Raleigh when we lived down there for 5 years. And probably north of 40k of it is all highway, since when I did drive it was to the airport and back. My wife also works from home...having 2 cars is just a complete waste 95% of the time. But with a 4 & 2 year old, getting rid of 1 only to need a second car in 2 or 3 years for the kids activities, and incurring a needless payment, is even dumber. But it still kills me to have these 2 things sitting in the garage/driveway for 3 years now (when we got WFH jobes) and MAYBE 4x a year they are both being used at the same time.

Better to have it and not need it.

That little Focus is worth more now as you described it than it was in 2018 lol.

We have 2 cars that get driven every single day. My son has one as well (which is ours)….also have a 2004 Nissan truck that gets used 2-3x per week but for small stuff and has been in shop for a transmission for 3 G D months….so I’m missing it huge this summer. (Have a few yards we mow so need it)

Could use that $12k though, too! Lol. But yes, agreed, and we know we will need it shortly, so prefer to not have car payments when that happens.

God bless those rich people who made it all possible for us.

Tell us about your SAT score.

Took it once in 8th grade, couldn’t even guess at what the score was.

I could tell you what my ACT was in 12th.

I wanted jmog’s score - even though he’s offered it here before.  We’re overdue hearing about his smarts.

In comparison, you’re a dumbass

Wrong, never once have I said what my SAT score was because I only took it once before HS and I couldn’t even guess what my score was.

Well it seems that people are more interested in each other than the sub.

I guess it is old news now 🤷

Well then it was your ACT.  I know you’ve posted unsolicited GPA and standardized scores on here.  We’ve been very impressed

Don't believe they were unsolicited but ok. There was usually context, shoot, at one point there was literally a thread asking what people's SAT/ACT scores were, another case may have been estimates on scores needed to get through certain majors in college as some are harder than others, etc.

I highly doubt we were talking about politics and I just blurted out "well I got a XYZ on the ACT".

I started that ACT thread and I’m guessing around 2012 as my daughter just took hers and was wondering comparisons.

The thread was ridiculously embellished throughout.

“I think I got a 32 or a 33 but just finished 8th grade and had 2 hours sleep and didn’t really care”

Hey, I didn't embellish mine, assuming I actually gave it. Did it twice and either went 29/30 or 30/31. And 1240'd the SAT the one time I took it. But I find tests like that to be WAY easier than actual ones where you have to know your shit. For example, first quarter in college, when tests involved things like writing essays on stuff you were supposed to read and actually solving problems while showing your work, I had to CRAM the final 4 weeks to get my GPA up to barely over 2.0 from the D or so average I had at that point.

For each question on a standardized test, you have two options.

1. You know it.

2. You don't know it, but hopefully can at least eliminate 1-2 of the 4 answers, so instead of a 25% chance of getting it right via guess, you have a 33% or 50% of getting it right.

I might have been a 25 or so based on actual knowledge, but the educated guess factor had to easily add a few points to my total. So, of course, the education folk went to a more standardized testing curriculum around when I was getting ready to graduate so kids could still be dummies, but have a better chance of scoring well so the schools looked more competent in what they were doing.

If you were a 29 or 30 then you were the 2nd dumbest person on the thread behind me, well and Spock lol

Hey Justin….can that thread be found?

I'll be the odd one out and state that I don't give a shit how well any of you did, I'm not going to be using any of it in order to be impressed enough to hire any of you.

And now that I've been a dick, carry on.

I should hope not. I doubt the majority of people here would want to see even some of the things I see on a regular basis!

I honestly can’t remember my overall, it was around 31/32 the second time I took it. The important part for me going into engineering was the math and science, I got 36 on both of those and that allowed me to get my BS paid for completely.

My English/reading scores were around 26s or something to get that about 31 composite.

Oh, homeless with addictions that need services, attempted suicides, domestic violence, placement of elderly, things of that nature. Not to mention any number of other things that arrive in a busy ER that I'm not particularly involved in but sometimes witness nonetheless.
