I've been doing Lyft for the past few weekends just to make a little extra cash. I've given almost 60 rides and only received probably 5 tips. It's strange to me because when I actually worked for a cab company I was tipped over half of the time.

I have been delivering pizza. I get a tip every time.
I'll usually tip a buck or two when using Uber or Lyft. I couldn't tell you the last time I took a cab.
How do you like driving? I started the signup process for Lyft a few days ago. I'm not sure how often I'll actually drive, but it was easy enough to signup so I'll test it out.

I never expect a big tip, but I feel like if you give a driver a good rating and your ride is only 3 to 4 bucks, it wouldn't hurt to hand a dollar or two out. Maybe I'm just in a cheap part of the state. Ha
I like it so far. I generally enjoy talking to people, so that helps my opinion. I'm close to getting my medical transportation business off the ground, so I probably won't do it a lot soon, but it's ok.

I have never received lower than 4 out of 5 stars and I generally have lengthy conversations with everyone and still barely get a tip. It's strange to me as I'm like you, I always tip.

Back when I first started using Uber it was my understanding that you weren't even supposed to give a tip. That was the whole point...no cash changing hands, and there was no option to leave one on the app. I know things have changed since then, though. My friends and I all tip these days.

Yeah, I never used to tip Uber (and I often have very little cash on me). Now I'll do a standard 15-20% (especially if I'm expensing it).
Problem is, even now it's pretty damn un-user friendly to tip. Driver has to process the ride is over before it gives me an option to add a tip - I'm guessing this is intentional. It's a nuisance for me, however, and I imagine people are already on to other things or preoccupied with something else by the time the tip option pops up.
Like Fab said, I thought the point is to pay a predetermined amount for the service of getting you from point A to point B? I don’t see why you should be paying more than that.

For what it's worth, I had a cab driver (who also does Uber) tell me he makes about 20% less on Uber. I'm guessing about half that difference is tips, and the rest a slightly lower rate (which Uber can probably justify by being more efficient for finding fares).
Well, I guess for people who are just doing it for something to do, it's ok to only make 4 bucks for a ride if it's on their way to Wal Mart but I know a decent amount of people who are doing it for extra cash. Yes, I realize you don't have to give extra for that reason, but I see nothing wrong with tipping. If you don't think you should, there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe I'm in it for the wrong reason. I had some pretty crappy passengers this weekend including one talking down to me for being from a rural area and I'm thinking her 4 bucks wasn't worth my time. Just my opinion.
People don’t tip because it’s anonymous and you’re already out of the car. The driver has already submitted a ranking, so there is no social consequence to not tipping, unless you live in a small enough town that you’re likely to see that driver again. When you took a taxi, you had to abstain from tipping while you were still sitting next to the driver, and it created an awkward scenario if you didn’t. I have taken 200+ Ubers and never to my knowledge had the same driver twice. I tip $2 if my driver drives safely, $3 if they are a nice person, and $0 if they drive like an idiot or have to slam on the brakes much throughout the ride (my wife had very bad motion sickness so I’ve become sensitive to deceleration rate). These rides all are in the $5-15 dollar range if you want an idea of the %.

I normally tip a buck. If the driver is cool I give him/her $2.
Uber Eats in DC does a bicycle delivery. I have every other Friday off and contemplated signing up for it for shits/giggles.
bigdaddy, when you go online, are you actually able to choose to give rides based on location of pickup and destination, or does it automatically assign you a ride and you have to pick them up regardless?

I've had the same person 2 times already in my 2 weekends of driving. I drive in Cleveland, so obviously not the biggest city. I feel like I will have the same person multiple times eventually because a few of the suburbs only have 1 actual cab company and almost everyone in this particular suburb that I stay in the most uses Lyft or Uber. As I said I don't expect 2 dollars or more on every ride but I have given a lot of rides that were only 3 or 4 bucks and haven't received a tip on a lot of them. Some of them are drunk and should be a little more appreciative of a ride home. Yes, I realize that it's my choice to do this and if I don't like the money or process, I can quit but still. If you are only paying 4 dollars for your ride home from the bar, you can give a dollar or two to a safe and friendly driver. Once again, just my opinion, I could be wrong.
