Are hot dogs sandwiches? This is an argument I'm much more receptive to.

Apparently some judge in Indiana ruled that tacos and burritos are sandwiches to get around a stupid ordinance that prevented anything but sandwich shops from operating. They were talking about it at work today, and then the topic of cereal being soup came up. She apparently converted someone in the "no" camp with her arguments in the affirmative. Now I'm questioning her entire organization.

No veggies and not hot = not soup.

If your wife disagrees, challenge her to chop up some celery in a bowl of cheerios, heat it up, and eat it.

Sandwiches traditionally have lettuce, tomato and cheese.  So, no not a sandwich.

I'm sure everyone, lacking a hot dog bun, has split two franks on sandwich bread.  And I'll bet you still never thought you were eating a sandwich.

I don't think veggies are a necessary requirement for a soup. I'm sure I've had chicken noodle soup that just had noodles and chicken. I've also had plenty of cold soups (gazpacho, etc). So I don't think veggies + hot are the defining characteristics. 

I would say something needs to have at least one of the following to be a soup: meat, vegetables, hot.

Is chili a soup?

Soup has to have an element of the savory for at least one component. Usually that comes from broth/stock (which shoehorns a meat) and or a vegetable, along with some spice or herb that enhances the dominate flavor. So a soup encompasses a wide variety of foods from pumpkin to beef.

A stew, gumbo or chowder has some sort of thickener but applies the same principle as soup. 

Hot dogs are essentially a hoagie, which is a type of sandwich.

I hate to quibble, but I am the Devils Advocate. Cereal, by its self is not a soup, however when you ad milk I think you have an argument for soup. I would suggest that a liquid matrix can be a soup all by itself IE Tomato soup. I do not believe heat is necessary, I have ate many cold soups such as cucumber. You do not even need a bowl. ( cup of soup)  and for all of you, you should be ashamed of your preconceptions of how a liquid identifies it self. Do you believe that chili is not chili if you add BEANS? What would you say that a chicken broth decided that it was a pasta dish? Would you be so cold hearted to ruin a dishes aspirations because you think a little broth means that it can be nothing more than a soup?
