This kiss of death...aka, what everyone always says about transfers you dont know about and late/spring signings.reclegend22;1608064 wrote:Yeah, he looks like a solid fit for Duke as a big man. But I'm not going to lie. I had no idea he even played basketball two weeks ago. But I like what I've seen from his videos and from what I've read.
Not saying he is bad or anything, but do any group of athletes get more overhyped than the late signings and transfers? Schools panic at the lose of players and totally reach 90% of the time on guys like this.

Possibly true, but if Duke's past transfers are any indication, K doesn't just take anyone. The only transfers he has accepted at Duke are Roshown McLeod, Dahntay Jones, Seth Curry and Rodney Hood (all were All-ACC at Duke). He seems to do his homework. Either way, a 6-9, 265-pound big man who is a proven defender and rebounder -- even from a smaller conference -- is still a pretty good snag for a team coming off a season where it had almost no traditional size inside (and may not have much in 2015-16 depending on who leaves). As a transfer, Obi will also have to sit out a year, which will give the kid time to acclimate to the Duke system and improve in practice going against top competition.Laley23;1608070 wrote:This kiss of death...aka, what everyone always says about transfers you dont know about and late/spring signings.

Whether he ever turns into a star or not, size is something that can't be taught, so I'll trust the Duke staff evaluated Obi properly before signing him.

Not sure if mentioned here yet. Former UNLV guard Bryce Dejean-Jones, who averaged 13, 3 and 3 last season for the Runnin' Rebels, has transferred to Iowa State. Nice addition for Fred Hoiberg, especially with the losses of Melvin Ejim and DeAndre Kane on the wing to graduation.
Of course, an even bigger loss for Iowa State could be Hoiberg, who is reported to be a candidate for the Knicks or Timberwolves.

Hoiberg would be a good fit with Minnesota.

UConn was trying to lure him in with the promise that he could be the program's academic game-changer who could potentially get them above a 10% graduation rate for the first time in eons.reclegend22;1608061 wrote:Also, as his final list of schools suggest -- Duke, Michigan and Vanderbilt -- Obi was focused on not only selecting a good basketball school but also one that excels in academics. It's one of the primary reasons he was at Rice to begin. That's likely why Georgetown and Virginia were also contenders. Not sure about the validity of UConn.

Chane Behanan declares for the draft. Rumor is he will wear this on draft night.

I have always envisioned traveling up to UConn only to find nothing but Gampel Pavilion in the middle of a meadow. Like UConn is a real place.Heretic;1608286 wrote:UConn was trying to lure him in with the promise that he could be the program's academic game-changer who could potentially get them above a 10% graduation rate for the first time in eons.

Speaking of the Huskies, early reports are that UConn and Duke are set to square off in the Meadowlands just prior to Christmas. If Ryan Boatright and DeAndre Daniels both return, both teams could be ranked in the Top 10 in the preseason.
In addition to UConn, the Blue Devils' early non-conference schedule will also consist of Michigan State in the Champions Classic, possibly UNLV in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, and a likely matchup with Wisconsin in Madison. Duke will find out what it's made of very early on with the new cast of players leading the way.

Maybe I missed this but...
McGary is declaring for the draft after testing positive for marijuana and facing a one year suspension from the NCAA.

It's crappy to get busted for that, but at the same time, it's just another thing in line for McGary.

I may be wrong, but it was starting to sound as if McGary might be headed back to Ann Arbor. A bad hand for Michigan fans, but in an odd way this will probably work out for the best for the kid.

UNLV forward Khem Birch declares for the NBA Draft. That wipes out one of college basketball's best defensive front courts from a season ago, in light of Roscoe Smith's declaration a few weeks ago.
With the departure of Bryce Dejean-Jones earlier this week, this is a pretty big blow for Dave Rice. He's got a good class coming in, but the mass departures will likely result in another trip to the NIT and a national coaching search next spring.

If this is true I think that Kentucky has to be the early favorite going into next year. It would be replacing James Young with 3rd-year Poythress, replacing Randle with WCS in the starting lineup, and then all of the freshman. And now most of them realize what it takes to win. At the very least it would be a nightmare for SEC schools.wildcats20;1609064 wrote:Nope...

Having the offensive versatility is the big difference. Imagine having to prepare for Booker and the twins, all 6'6 guards, then you can bring in Ullis? It's almost unfair to have to gameplan for.
If Calipari figures out how to adjust to what is needed in a given situation, it's trouble. He's got so many pieces.
