You make that trade before they change their minds.

If they can get anything of value for him, right now, you do it. I don't see Mayfield getting outright released but I get the impression the Browns will have to sweeten any deal by paying part of that salary.

Latest rumors have the Browns shipping Mayfield to Atlanta for either a 2nd or 3rd round pick. I'm assuming they'd be eating a chunk of his contract.

If the Browns can't move Mayfield, the smart play is to just keep him the whole season and let him walk. In that case they would still get a 3rd round compensatory pick.

Fun fact, which I'm sure many know....Nick Chubb is the only RB in NFL history to rush for 100+ yards with 3 carries or less in a game (vs Raiders). And then Hue benched him.

Andrew Berry's wife posted on Twitter pictures of pieces of paper from when Berry was managing salary caps as a "hobby." This was after he'd rush home from school and finish his homework so he could put together cap management strategies......in the 5th grade. #nerd

Ward gets 5 years ~$100M. Browns are locking up a lot of pieces, but at a hefty price. I'll say this, it's at the most important positions.

This is going to be chump change in a couple of years. DirecTV's contract with Sunday Ticket expires after the 2022 season and it sounds like Apple is going to make a hard push to acquire it at 2.5 billion. By the time they get into the meat of Ward's contract there will be plenty of money. Bigger concern, for me is his durability.

I just was texting with my buddy about Berry's spending free locking all these guys up. Seems he is playing chess forecasting what the new cap will be. Sure enough, the AppleTV+ news drops today... All these core guys/positions being locked up for a ton of money, but when that kicks in, he may have a ton of bargains on hand.

I just saw that and was wondering the same. That 18.8 million price tag is an albatross. If Mayfield were in this draft he'd be the #1 QB, by a landslide.  May also have to do with owners being pissed at Haslam for the Watson contract.
