No way would I go. Hope they purchased travel insurance.

I know Cancun and other spots are fine if you follow the rules but I’ve never had much desire to go to Mexico. And I especially wouldn’t now.

My daughter is supposed ot go to Cancun in May, so I am following the situation closely. 

I think I personally would not go. I understand Mexico is a big country, but there is too much uncertainty. 

We were in Cancun from February 18-22. We were at the airport when news started to spread about the cartel retaliation. Not one thing was noticed or different at the Cancun resort(s), and the locals all said its a different cartel in that area, without much presence in Cancun. However, they also mentioned that when one has an issue with the government, they will come together for a time to fight back. Soooo, yeah, I would not be going to Mexico. 

It seems the violence will calm down and then spike at random times. The government doesnt take down someone as powerful as El Mencho if they arent ready to fight a war and actually start to take their country back. And the cartels are going to get their "justice".

I got back on the 20th after 10 days in Isla Mujeres. I've spent extended periods over the past few years in Mexico...mostly Playa del Carmen. Actually lived there full time prior to getting my current job. I still have a ton of friends and contacts there. 

A few cars were set on fire in Tulum and Playa on Sunday, that's about it. 

Regarding going to San Miguel de Allende, I would just watch closely and if they need to make a decision soon....I'd probably bail. Tell them to monitor the travel advisories closely based on the region/state. I know things were popping off in the state Guanajuato. 

I'm going to Mexico City for 4-6 weeks starting in mid-April and from what I've heard it's business as usual, but I'm still monitoring. I had plans for 7-10 days in Guanajuato (the city), but that section of the trip is a TBD for now. 

Also to add the government recently beefed up security forces in Cancun and surrounding areas prior to all this. The Riviera Maya is their cash cow, so they try their best for stuff like this to not scare tourists off. 

It is weird to see all branches of the military roaming the beaches in tactical gear with assault rifles, but I'm used to it now.

That’d be a hard pass for me. You’re a braver man.

I take it as it's all a show. In my years there I've never seen them doing anything other then patrolling. 

Most are young kids and/or women. It's wild to see. My nephew loved it. They will also pose for photos if you ask them nicely.

I was down between Cancun and plata drl Carmen in 1996 for my honeymoon and there was some of that on the roads where there were military/police stops. But I don’t remember anything on the beach.  Times have changed I guess.
