I'm not going to post a video of the incident, but holy crap was it bad. If you haven't watched the video yet, I would recommend against it. Or at least stop watching as soon as the "kick" happens.

Lots of talk on whether it was intentional or not, and whether Matt Petgrave should face charges.

I watched just now up until the kick. I am assuming the kick is what caused the injury/death (trust me...).

Absolutely that asshole should be charged, there is ZERO reason for a drop kick with a sharp bladed skate on your foot should be legal, even in ice hockey.

He literally drop kicked him in the freaking neck with an ice skate on. He goes to jail, period.

I don’t really follow hockey but I’ve heard of something similar happening before, with a goalie maybe? So while it’s rare it’d still scare the hell out of me.

And if no one has ever died from this up until now, it doesn’t really paint the other guy in a very innocent picture.

Saw a sports anchor on YouTube say that we need to have our prayers for the guy who died but also for the guy who committed this “freak accident” as he is “going through a lot”

1. Drop kicking someone in the throat with a hockey skate is not a “freak accident”. That’s an intentional act.

2. F that guys feelings, he killed a man while assaulting him.

Video of game angle looks bad. I'd like to see the reverse angle or a close up; it looks like maybe the left toe is clipped causing him to loose balance and fly in the air.

Yeah, a better angle would help. He was checking into another player and then his foot just flies into the air. As fast as hockey moves, I'd think it'd be impossible to remotely prove anything like intent off an utterly bizarre-looking play, but a guy's leg flying up like that isn't something that usually happens (although someone on Twitter did post a video of a similar thing happening in the NHL when a guy lost his balance after a check...although in that case, the losing of balance was helped along by a stick across the legs).

There was a blue jackets a few years ago who got sliced by an opponents skate. It came within a few cm of his eye. He got a ton of stitches. I’ll have to see if I can find the picture and info.

Look how close he is to losing an eye.

I hope I’m wrong and that was accidental, but it sure looked like a spinning back kick like in the UFC, but with a sharp blade on the end of the foot.
