I like it as a U-23 event. I agree that the Olympics don't have the magnitude of the World Cup or Euro, but it's good exposure for the younger players. I don't even think the big European soccer countries give a shit about Olympic soccer. Everyone just pays attention to their actual national teams that compete in the World Cup. It may be exposure, but no one cares, at all. I agree on tennis as well... it's basically a worldwide federation, so those players play each other every goddamn week for 4 years, so the Olympics are beyond meaningless for them.

US Olympians get a fair amount of taxpayer support (didn't use to always be that way, but with rule changes they can get endorsements and more prize money today). Anyway, a gold medal gets like a $15k prize ($10k for silver), I think awarded by the Olympics themselves, or perhaps the USOC.
But not so fast...Apparently success, even in th Olympics, means paying more than your fair share. So gold medal winners can expect to cough up over $5k in taxes for winning. Probably taxed on the value of the gold medal, too.

There is also a U-23 (or maybe U-21?) world cup, which countries take more seriously.
I like the idea of having golf. Have a team tournament, then have the individual tournament the following week.

Might evolve into that but I think individual competition for the first year is ok. They need to make sure the players really want to be there.
