I actually had some more written, but I lost it. Basically said that schools that have large rosters like that are driven by enrollment. They get their enrollment and recruitment numbers from the athletic department. The other thing that is part of the equation is male student population...it's something that is often not talked about. Male sports have higher rosters more commonly than female sports because male college enrollment is decreasing (and will over the next 10+ years, which is projected). So, they use the sports to attract males to higher education...like you said, "colleges aren't stupid."
