Not all are "walk-ons" though. Many are recruited. Many get some form of athletic aid (if they are DII or NAIA).

I actually had some more written, but I lost it. Basically said that schools that have large rosters like that are driven by enrollment. They get their enrollment and recruitment numbers from the athletic department. The other thing that is part of the equation is male student population...it's something that is often not talked about. Male sports have higher rosters more commonly than female sports because male college enrollment is decreasing (and will over the next 10+ years, which is projected). So, they use the sports to attract males to higher education...like you said, "colleges aren't stupid."

Well that's not the only difference. Soccer requires higher top end speed, more overall coordination, and occasional contact.

Yeah and my occasional contact and no coordination results in the other team running 40 yards away. Even in World Cup the players don't run constantly (usually because Pierre is faking an injury, another concept that the soccer nerds ignore, the ridiculous faking of injuries). You can't fake that in running. It is a full action behavior, and a violent action to your body, you can't just half-ass it.

No way OSH or anyone else (except perhaps CCRunner) has pulled a sub 35 10K and keep that type of shape for multiple races in a season.

Also, your faking injuries comment was idiotic. Faking injuries has happened in every major sport, as well as "flopping." Not just a soccer thing.

It's been done in the NFL, NBA, and hell, even baseball.

Don't worry, I have no doubt you were the stud of your intramural leagues back in the day. You should have put your athletic ability to good use and done something other than XC though.

Soccer makes it an art, and it doesn't happen in running.

You run any race, a 5K or whatever, there are no points for acting like a pussy and have the other runners stop. The goal is to get to the end, it is a sport with a definitive winner. The winner gets there. Heck, IMO it is the most classic sport. Either you run faster than the others do, or don't and lose, and lose big if you aren't in competitive shape.

I was indeed pretty good, and still am. I just don't understand how people piss on running. It is all about training, mental endurance and actually being timed.

You can't fake it.

Either you get there faster, or you don't.

Cool story, but I said MAJOR sports all have an instance of flopping.

Running isn't, nor will ever be considered "major."

Ratings, viewership, attendance, and $$$$ don't lie, so it doesn't really matter what your opinion is or how upset you get over it.

Also, while I don't care for CC, I'm not going to bash individuals who do it, like some people do with soccer.

The fact is, you couldn't play soccer at a high level, just the same as you make claims of people who couldn't run a sub 35 10K.

Was able to get this video as well.....the majority of players on the field were standing around, and maybe jogging.

Watched the video multiple times, dude on white team was incredibly out of position on the "southeast" side of the screen, made his best effort to stop the goal (and failed), tough luck for him. The rest of the guys walking around (in a sport where supposedly you run constantly) didn't help much.

Not argument here, just a rebuttal.

Soccer players get to rest a lot more during their game. Compared to a XC race, soccer players should be able to sprint faster for those few seconds before resting again.

Malone Invite (college 8k race) in 1990 had two runners stop about 200 meters after the start and get into a fist fight. No ref's came and stopped it or handed out yellow cards. A lot more contact in XC then you realize......my shins and ankles have the scars to prove it

Also, coordination I question also. The ground XC runners race on is not groomed, like soccer fields.
Check out Okie State's college invite, they have man-made barriers you must hurdle. Some XC courses cross streams, like Heidelberg U. Another example is Wilmington Colleges XC course, which has roots sticking out all over the place.

BTW everyone needs to watch Hoops23's video.

Aside from (i) the Mulletude of the great player (Messi), (ii) the walking around of guys apparently not caring he is trying score, you have (iii) a guy complaining to the referees at the 1:20 mark.

Is it an official rule of soccer that they have to gripe at the refs/fake an injury every game?

Haha I don't want to get into this debate anymore but this is so true. Peope who say there is no contact hasn't really ever been out there. I've seen people try and run others into trees/woods, guys get intentionally spiked, get shoved down on purpose and you will constantly get elbowed especially in big meets, and as you mentioned guys get into fist fights.

No way I'd put the XC runner at 3rd maybe even 2nd. No one would give a shit about the XC runner he would probably just run around the room while the others fight each other out of it. A soccer player would easily be last he would cower to the ground as soon as you laid a finger on him. The baseball player would be next just cause he is lazy and wouldn't give a shit. The basketball player would act all tough then just get laid out real quick by a football player or wrestler. And then the football player and wrestler would worry about beating each other to prove who was the most dominate.

But I can make a generic statement to fight my arguement. You're on a jungle island and 200 miles across it is a boat and the first one there gets back to their home land safely. Who wins? I'd go:

2)Wrestler
3)Soccer Player
4)Football Player
5)Basketball Player

It is unfortunate when it happens, but usually the guys involved catch a race marshall and get back in the game. I was only in one "melee" involving an incident where a guy shoved my teammate into a cornfield - we worked it out, got back in but it still cost us at least 40 seconds of time. The race continues.

That's easy...unless the other 5 all attacked the wrestler at once...the wrestler. If it was 1 on 1 "combat" while in said room, the wrestler wins and its not even close.
