You can win a state title in wrestling (even a national title) just on pure talent while being "lazy" in practice. You could never do this in distance running or XC. Wrestling has an "off-season" where you can do nothing and not dramatically effect your ability to be successful in the sport, unlike distance running.
Too many intangibles in distance running....
Your whole paragraph shows me you know nothing about wrestling, and this is coming from someone who hated wrestling in HS.
You don't have 4x state champions in XC because there is only one state champ per division.
In wrestling there are 3 divisions and 14 weight classes per division. That is 42 state champions every season. XC has 3 state champions per season...HUGE difference.
If you believe that ANY of the 4x state champions in history did not wrestle all year long then again, you don't understand the sport. To get that good kids start wrestling all year long at the age of 5 and 6, not even waiting until HS.
My one son loves wrestling, he's 8 right now. Even at the youth age there are wrestling tournaments all year long. They are spread out more come summer, but you can easily wrestle at 2 or more tournaments a month all year long easily even for little kids.
