According to a release by Paterno's son Scott, Joe is trying to set up an off campus press conference. They are also denying the NYT report and say no discussion of his coaching status has taken place. Sounds to me like Joe wants to talk and the University wants him to stay quiet. Oh, the twists and turns of this mess.

I don't understand what there is to prepare that could take "days or weeks". They've either decided this is enough to get rid of him or they haven't. What possible good can come from letting him stay one minute longer if you've decided that his role in this type of scandal warrants his removal at all? What is the message in letting him stay?

How does he deserve a better exit? He allowed a child rapist to operate a minimum of 9 years longer than he should have had if Paterno had handled himself correctly. Instead he at the very least buried his head in the sand. He will deserve everything that comes his way and then some.

I find it more sad that sports sometimes takes such precedence over basic human dignity. He doesn't deserve anything better considering he put his own sporting image over the safety of (how many?) children. It is sad that he didn't cement his legacy back in 2002 by actually demonstrating the integrity many thought he had and that as a result of not actually possessing that integrity, many more children went on to be hurt right under the guy's nose (in his own sporting facilities).

No, not a sad day for sports, but a sad lifestyle.

He deserves anything bad that happens to him or his legacy from here on out.

Everything about this man, including his football career, is justifiably forever tarnished. He didn't just keep quiet about a child predator on his staff, he HELPED him by giving him unfettered access to the university's facilities for a decade.

Most likely, he did this to protect the very image that is now destroyed.

It's why he's wanting his son to set up a press conference -- and I'm betting it's against his son's advice. He feels the need to try and save his reputation, even though that's no longer possible. No matter what he says at the press conference, or how he answers questions, nobody will believe he didn't cover this up.

All they'll see is a pathetic old man who's desperate to save what little respect he has left, and he's willing to lie to a bunch of reporters to do it.

There is nothing he can say at this point to change things, and that's why I'm betting he's been told to just keep quiet. But he's shown how stubborn and controlling he is...so he'll probably be the architect of his final and very public self immolation.

It's unfortunate that he's being allowed to "resign." I would prefer him being dragged out of town by 4 horses attached to each limb.

As far as his legacy, who cares about his football accomplishments? He should, and will I believe, be talked about in the same way OJ Simpson is, with football accomplishments as nothing more than a small footnote on his life. He will be remembered first, as an accomplice to child rape, and then as an afterthought, "oh yeah, and he won a lot of games."

No. But just because you did the very minimum the law requires doesn't mean you did the right thing.

Paterno, because he was involved in covering this up for so many years, comes across as being morally bankrupt.

His silence and approval of Sandusky's continued use of PSU facilities helped facilitate God knows how many child molestations. It may not be a legal issue, but it certainly speaks very loudly about the type of person he is. He put protecting his own name and that of the university ahead of the safety of children.

I don't know what other motivation there could have been, except one that is purely selfish (although I'm sure he told himself he was protecting the university, his team, etc.).

If he had spoken up years ago, we would have still seen this same type of reaction, because Sandusky was part of PSU for so many years. Paterno knew this, so he rolled the dice and kept quiet.

I disagree. If he had come forward in 2002 and said this happened at HIS school in HIS facility and HE would not stand for such disgusting behavior, he would have been applauded for living behind his words of always doing what is right.

I agree with you about this. If they had went to the police and banned Sandusky from the University in 2002 Paterno would have the same reputation he did before all this came out... sadly that never happened.

Okay, let's just imagine that happened. Now the reporters descend on HV and find out there was an incident in 1998 where janitors saw Sandusky molesting a boy in the showers, and it just disappeared in the chain of command like the 2002 stuff did.

The mother of that victim is talking to the media; she'd do the same thing then.

So there was an incident in 1998 and nothing was done, Coach Paterno, why is that? Why was Sandusky allowed to maintain an office and have keys to the facility after he retired under a black cloud?

Sandusky has been here for more than 30 years, coach, how could you have not known what was going on?

In the meantime, they will be talking to everyone in the area and putting out calls for any victims to come forward. More will.

Do you really think the reaction won't be just about the same? They covered up an incident and let him molest freely for four more years. You don't think the media won't be living in HV for the foreseeable future and finding out a lot of stuff that will show Paterno should have known what was going on?

Paterno knew this. He knew it would jeopardize things, so he said nothing. Just like 4 years later. Deny, deny, deny and hope it goes away.

It didn't work now, and it would not have worked then.

WB I meant to say 1998 in my orginal post I've been very clear(see the other thread) about wondering why Sandusky was still around after 1998. Got caught up in work stuff and just went off Falcons quote. Sorry for the confusion. But I agree with your points if he would have cameout about this in 2002.
