You must have read wrong. My understanding of it is, we applied for consideration to be accepted into the conference (much like you'd apply to a job), but later realized that it wasn't the best fit for our school. Just because we applied doesn't mean we have to join if accepted, much like you aren't required to accept a job if offered after applying to it. I agree, but it didn't work with all sports; actually it was more detrimental for the other sports, other than football.
