I did play in that game and it was a typical Campbell vs Struthers game. We shot out to a big lead and Struthers came back it was a great game for the 1991 MVC championship.
If your brother played under Rozum, then I highly doubt that he didn't play because of "popularity". Rozum and his staff played the best 11, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Now if he played under Kish, then that is a different story.
Good Luck Red Devils!
I looked up the article on the 1991 game in my Campbell Football Scrapbook. Campbell led 28-0 at halftime. Struthers stormed back in the second half and cut the lead to 31-28 with three minutes left in the game. Struthers scored touchdowns on two hook and ladder plays during the rally. With three minutes left, Campbell drove 70 yards in just four plays, led by Karlin Adams, who rushed for 309 yards on 27 carries in just three quarters. Adams missed the entire second quarter due to a deep cut on his left hand. On that final 70 yard drive, Adams carried the ball three of the four plays before QB John Wolfe scored from 3 yards out. Campbell won the MVC title outright with the victory, with help of Salem's upset of Girard. Adams scored from 44, 18, and 88 yards out in the game's first nine minutes. He had 174 yards rushing at the end of the first quarter. Campbell rushed for 402 yards on 48 carries in the game. QB Jim Fox, wide receiver Anthony Skarote, and running back Brian Blazek were the key players in the Struthers rally.
I remember the night very well. It was around 65 degrees and Wildcat Stadium was filled to capacity. Adams finished the regular season with 1,199 yards rushing. Campbell and Struthers both finished the regular season with 7-3 records. But Campbell finished at 5-1 in the MVC. Struthers and Girard tied for second place with 4-2 records. Girard beat Campbell 20-13 earlier in the season. Campbell's other two regular season losses were to Howland 28-24 and to Chaney 9-0. Campbell defeated Warren JFK 32-12 in the regular season. I believe JFK came into that regular season game ranked #1 in the AP D-4 poll and top ranked in the region in computer points. But the Devils lost to the Eagles 34-6 in a horribly officiated game at Boardman in the playoffs. Campbell had 105 yards in penalties in the third quarter alone in that game. Kennedy seemed to catch Campbell by surprise in the game, starting wide receiver Antolini at QB. Kennedy was known for its passing game that season. But in the playoff game against Campbell they ran the ball very often in an attempt to keep the Campbell offense off the field. It worked. JFK had 72 plays from scrimmage in that game compared to just 30 for Campbell.
Regardless, this was another fine season for Campbell, a team not expected to challenge for the MVC title that year.
These are the Campbell players who were selected to the All -MVC first team in 1990: Karlin Adams (defensive back.....yes defensive back), Dave Vernon (guard), Jim Hazimihalis (inside linebacker), Chris Rhodes (outside linebacker). The players who made the second team: Jim Hughes (offensive tackle), Damon Love (running back), Anthony Patellis (down lineman). Dom Thomas and John Hostal were honorable mention players. Karlin Adams was selected player of the year for his efforts on both sides of the ball.
