JJ tended toward over-moderating, while I think the OC tends more toward under-moderating. As pointed out above, either of these extremes is going to cause some problems, and it's tough to draw a line that works for everyone. I, for one, enjoy having Society, Sage, and Sleeper around, as they occasionally make some pretty funny comments. The rest of the time, I just ignore 'em--but I don't like the idea of banning people or moderating posts that are just joking. If people get so upset over someone on a random internet forum calling out their favorite high school/college/pro team and saying that they suck . . . I don't know what to tell you. People like that need thicker skin.
I do think JJ's has a leg up on straight high school info, largely as a result of the critical mass of posters. A few ideas:
(1) attempt to partner up with a HS sports site that focuses on content, not on message boards (CalPreps? Something like Bucknuts?);
(2) have user-generated HS sports content that provides an inside view--I think Yappi does/did something like this;
(3) create a "killer app" on the scoreboard front--if this site had the most up-to-date scores of any site (in an easy format to follow), it would get a huge traffic bump in the fall;
(4) try to provide a one-stop shop for HS sports. You could create a page for each conference/school/sports, link rss search feeds from the forum/internet to that page, include stadium pictures/directions, list scores, list historical rankings/ratings from various sites, do something wiki-style for school history, etc. Then, if people are looking for a one-stop place to go for Ohio HS sports content, they could come here;
(5) partner up with sports forums in other states to expand the brand, either by simple cross-linking or by something a little more sophisticated.
Justin, anything of this magnitude, I'd be willing to help you because that would be a beast for one man to overtake.
