The last chatter outing picture was pretty lame though the one in October will be much better.

You guys fucked yourselves with that crowd. Those who joined JJ for HS sports stayed. When you went to that site starting thread after thread of porn images, "Ohio Chatter rocks" threads and personal attacks on it's members...it made their decision easy. Pay the $12 for moderated, responsible and informative talks or go to a free board that allows the heinousness. Yes, I know their is some hypocrisy in that statement (I attacked JJ before the change after I was given a suspension)...but there is a reason why I am still a member in good standing over there and 75% of you are not.

You're not going to get the HS football crowd. Bottom line. Unless you do what JJHuddle does and cater the site to that. I have posted more on JJHuddle in the last week (because of HS football) then I have on here. This is an "off-season" site, and I mean that in the kindest way possible. Justin has done a lot here, and obviously cares about the needs/wants of each member....he's not to blame.

I do think, however, it will pick back up on it's own. Wait until football season goes by...make a strategy for next football season and learn from this experience.

To say that the people who joined JJ for high schools sports stayed is just wrong. I was one of those people. There may still be discussion about the larger schools, but it has decreased dramatically and any discussion of smaller schools and leagues in non-existent.

Justin... Bottom line is this:

This is YOUR site. No one else's. You pay for it, you run it. What do YOU want this place to be? You want change, but in what direction? Pro sports? College sports? High school sports? If you want this to be a BS'ing forum, then leave it, and change nothing.

If you want this place to change (for the supposed better) then you have to first decide the direction in which you would like to head.

Right, it's my site and I pay the bills, but without members it doesn't exist.

I don't have a specific direction that I personally want it to head, I just want it to head somewhere that will allow the site to grow.

I like the idea of having a page with high school football scores.
I'm always looking late friday night to see other teams results.
Not a forum, just a page of results.

Yes, but if you were to advertise this site to a target market, what would be your selling point? I'm just trying to figure out the situation here, not be a dick.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode... It's a show about NOTHING Jerry! :)

This is a good thread--thanks for starting it, Justin. There's always going to be some tension between keeping things civil and not over-moderating. JJ tended toward over-moderating, while I think the OC tends more toward under-moderating. As pointed out above, either of these extremes is going to cause some problems, and it's tough to draw a line that works for everyone. I, for one, enjoy having Society, Sage, and Sleeper around, as they occasionally make some pretty funny comments. The rest of the time, I just ignore 'em--but I don't like the idea of banning people or moderating posts that are just joking. If people get so upset over someone on a random internet forum calling out their favorite high school/college/pro team and saying that they suck . . . I don't know what to tell you. People like that need thicker skin.

I do think JJ's has a leg up on straight high school info, largely as a result of the critical mass of posters. A few ideas:

(1) attempt to partner up with a HS sports site that focuses on content, not on message boards (CalPreps? Something like Bucknuts?);

(2) have user-generated HS sports content that provides an inside view--I think Yappi does/did something like this;

(3) create a "killer app" on the scoreboard front--if this site had the most up-to-date scores of any site (in an easy format to follow), it would get a huge traffic bump in the fall;

(4) try to provide a one-stop shop for HS sports. You could create a page for each conference/school/sports, link rss search feeds from the forum/internet to that page, include stadium pictures/directions, list scores, list historical rankings/ratings from various sites, do something wiki-style for school history, etc. Then, if people are looking for a one-stop place to go for Ohio HS sports content, they could come here;

(5) partner up with sports forums in other states to expand the brand, either by simple cross-linking or by something a little more sophisticated.

Yeah, I can read and comprehend just fine. You HAVE to have some idea of what you want.

Example: you say you want a girl. Nothing specific, just a girl. I bring you a 300 pounder. You say "hell no!" Well, NO 300 pounder is a "specific" isn't it?

I've got something in mind for high school. I am hoping I'll be able to have it up and running before the season starts. It'll be a separate site in the same way that the golf outing site is separate. I.e. same domain but different software running it. It would be a "read-only" section, other than those granted permission to create "content." And no, the content wouldn't necessarily be poorly written articles, but if it did include those there would be no cost involved. :)

In general, I think the way the current site is is fine, it just needs tweaked a little.

I like that it is Ohio-centric with an emphasis on sports, whether they be HS, college or pro.
