Didn't Gingrich and his comrades try to shut down the government back in the 90's? Didn't that just about seal the deal on Clinton's re-election?


And when the R's take over Congress does that mean that everything will suddenly be OK again? Remember, the cycle is a little under 2 years. If they don't turn everything around by then they should be voted out, right?

They actually did shut it down for a few weeks if memory serves. And yes, Clinton successfully demagogued it to it to his advantage for re-election. Ironically, he also caved to about 90% of the Pubs' demands in the end...thus leading to the "balanced" budget circa 1999-2000.

And with the current mood of the electorate, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see congress flip back the other way in 2 years if there isn't significant improvement.

Independant and 3rd parties have a history of effin up the election process. But I have never known of a candidate "encouraging" a third part to run.

Poll Shows Surge in Democratic Enthusiasm
Contrary to nearly every other recent poll, a new Newsweek survey shows Democrats leading Republicans in the generic congressional ballot, 48% to 42%, among registered voters. Among those who have already voted, Democrats lead by 10 points, 52% to 42%.

The poll also shows President Obama's approval ratings have jumped substantially to 54%, while the portion of respondents who disapprove of the president dropped to 40%.

Said pollster Larry Hugick: "The idea that the Democrats are just going to sit this one out doesn't seem very likely. While there's no question that Republicans are going to pick up seats, the question is how many."

Sorry, Newsweek is not a reliable source.
Yes, the D's will probably come out a little more than anticipated. But, it won't matter.

Had as in past tense-yes. Now, not really. None of the cable news outlets have any credibility to me. Fox plays to the right, MSNBC to the left and CNN doesn't play to anyone, but still is all over the map and brings nothing to any conversation.

Back to the topic, I can see moderate gains by the R's. I see them taking the House, but not the Senate.

Unfortunately, Gibby, "Generic" is not on the ballot for Senator, Governor, or US Representative in any state or district in the entire US.

Real Clear Politics has generic R up by 6 - http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/generic_congressional_vote-901.html Interestingly, if you go to this website, you'll find the Marist/McClatchey poll you tried to tell us about. In the RCP numbers, M/M has it +6 for the generic R, not even as you suggest. RCP is updated as of 10-25.
