The average work days in an Ohio teachers contract is 187 worling days, compared to 240 working days for the public at large. Simple math shows that Ohio teachers work 28 percent less than most anyone else. Couple with a fact that teachers dont pay social security ( they are enrolled and dont pay for PERS) and have a solid pension plan, I think that they are fairly, if not overcompesated. If they want to make more, they should work more (or at least do thier job well) 50 grand a year for a job working 38 weeks a year ain't half bad
I'll do the math. 38 weeks times (and I'll be fair)
10 hour days divided into $50,000 per year
without great PERS retirement benefits paid for by the taxpayer rolled in.....not to mention 8 to 10 weeks of summer vacation plus holidays plus snow days..... That comes out to $26/hour.
OK...they aren't exactly rich but spare me the tired "we public school teachers are under-paid mantra." My mother-in-law and father-in-law are both retired Franklin County public school teachers. They now live in Carolina Beach, NC in a nice new house, drive shiny new cars, eat well, have largely free health care, and live a half mile from the ocean. Sounds like they did OK on paltry, pathetic teachers salaries.
