I'm a current college student from Kentucky working on a research piece about the 2012 case of Steubenville, Ohio. Since it's been 14 years since the case, there is only surface level articles. And a lot of misinformation guided from the whirlwind of social media attention at the time. Does anyone remember this case that could give me some insight? I want to give the benefit of the doubt to the town that was blasted on the media, but also by paying respect and doing justice to the poor victim of this situation. The media storm seems crazy for the time, and the way the town dealt with that. But I dont want to provide misinformation.

Ive watched it. From doing more research, It seems like there is so much more information about what went down. But I'm also running into a lot of misinformation.

It was a case involving the Big Red Football Team. I don't want to use the official wording, I don't want to cause offensive.

The doc was pretty damn accurate from what I understand.

The cover up was real.

That's what Ive been exploring. I read an article done in 2014 after the case where a journalist went around the town. No one wanted to talk about it. Everyone still victim blames and tries to protect the school. There was even an interview with some of the parents involved where they completely blamed the media. I understand the reserve in a way considering how popular the town got in the media, but it is really strange how closed off everyone is

Pretty sure he was. The twitter account was under KYAnonymous so I'd assume so. I haven't gotten into much research yet about the whole Anonymous deal. Do you remember anything specific or just the media coverage?

I had forgotten about that case!

Have you searched the archives of WTOV9 - news station from that city.

Maybe the archives of two local newspapers also:

Wheeling News Register/Intelligencer

and

Timesleaderonline.com

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice! From some of my research, Ive noticed that WTOV9 was rumored to not have covered the case very well. I dont know if this is misinformation and/or personal opinion but I will check it out.

While doing research I stumbled on a forum on here with the mention of Steubenville. I just thought maybe someone would have some more insight that was closer to the town.

The whole thing left an entirely bad impression of many people in that town.  I remember the video of the one kid laughing about it was really hard to see.

I have watched the video. It's sickening.  Some of the evidence Ive read makes me believe that this was a normal thing between the boys around there.

I remember feeling that the town/police seemed to take punishing/finding the hacker more serious then the actual case. I know he faced a longer sentence than the actual rapists.

I also remember he released emails from football boosters who were trying to cover things up.

I'll have to look into that more. I know that one of the volunteer coaches at the time, who's sister threw the party that night, was arrested in relation to the underage drinking at the party.
