You vs the Restaurant

What things do you cook or make that surpass the same thing at you favorite restaurants.....what things can’t quite measure up to the restaurants that you try?

For me my wife is a great cook so she can top many of the restaurant dishes but whenever we do ribs they aren’t as good. Some of the appetizer breads and onions the restraint has us beat as well.

We beat the restaurants in most meat dishes, most sides and desserts.

I’m working on a solution, but hit a snag.

I’ve actually found myself cooking a lot less during Covid. Partly because I’m more inclined to help restaurants, but it’s just hard with young kids. And I’m lazy.

But I look cooking breakfast myself vs ordering it. Plus it’s not hard to do. Anyone can fry up some eggs, bacon, potatoes. I don’t think Bob Evans does it any better than I could.

Aside from high end steakhouses, I’ll put my steak up against any place.

I make a mean breakfast. I think I’d enjoy being a short order cook at a greasy spoon in some small mountain town

And even leaving out high end steakhouses, I'll still put my steak up against any place.

While watching an episode of Band of Brothers, where a ship picked up two of the guys and they went to the galley, I imagined myself as a cook in the Navy where you had access to good food..........making good ass greasy spoon food for guys who hadn't had a good meal in a long time.  I often think about how good some homey comfort food would taste after you have missed out on it for a good long time.

Hole in the wall breakfast places are the best.

My barbecue, especially brisket, stands up against the best joints I've been to.

I believe that and especially with brisket as it is kinda hit and miss even at the good places

I can’t seem to make a decent from scratch pizza at home. Also I’ve always wanted to make a really good fried chicken/chicken fingers similar to places like hot chicken takeover but never can nail it.

While I'm not the best chef, I'd say that with frying fish and with breakfast (at least my personal favorite breakfast stuff), I'd put myself above at least any chain restaurant. Those places are generally too generic to stand out. Specialty places or, as said above, those hole in the wall breakfast places, probably would be at or above my level. Where I'd have to stick to my go-tos to hang with what they cook.

I'm a horrible cook, but I would take my chili over any I've had elsewhere.

Interesting

I love most all chili types
