Beach Vacation Routine

Just got back from the beach and have been to several different ones over my adult years. Seems like I have similar routines…..what are some of your’s on beach vacations?

We always stay a week. I leave at 5:30 am coming and going regardless of where we are going.

Once there I never set alarm but get up between 7:30-8:30….go for a long walk. Most days there are donuts/breakfast pastry type things to graze on. Chill a bit, pack a lunch for cooler and head to beach from around 11:00-4:00

Beach fun is bobbing in waves, taking walks up and down beach, skip ball, bocce ball and always dig a monster hole with a little plastic shovel for a 7 year old.

Head back in snack on chips/fudge…shower and either cook dinner or go out (always beat crowded dinner rush)

After we get ice cream…couple times a late pizza….sit on boardwalk and people watch…..play a lot of late night pool.

Always hit an arcade and a live show or two.

Probably one of my very last few with both of my kids

I refuse to go on a beach vacation when the property isn’t on the beach.

Once there, wake up when I wake up. Breakfast for everyone usually made by me. Pack cooler and walk to beach and crack open a morning alcoholic drink (usually by 9:30-10). Usually I lounge in the AM and do more swimming and games in afternoon. Walk back to place for lunch around 1-1:30 (every man for themselves for lunch). Usually inside for a few hrs watching NCAA Tournament or football. Head back to beach around 3pm and there until cocktail hour (5:30). Go back and watch the sunset (if sunset is on that side) from place with a drink.

Then fire up grill for dinner or head to the restaurant/bar. Come back and depending on crowd (I’m always up for it) have a few nightcaps.

Hahaha my joke to my wife is we might as well do to Dreams Omaha because she wants to spends 99% of the time at the pool vs beacg

Sleep time

Hungry time

Sober time

Drunk time

Rule 1 at the beach. Don’t worry about what the actual time is.

It’s been a while since I’ve been at the beach. We went to Lake Michigan a couple years ago. We did just book a week long trip to Outer Banks for June 2022. I haven’t been to the ocean in a long time.

Next year we’ll be going with a 3 and 7yo so still won’t be able to drink and sleep and nap whenever, unfortunately.

We did Outer Banks for 2nd year in a row

We Ike it a lot and stayed in less busy area (Rodanthe/Waves)…..will do a different beach next year and also looking at Mackinac Island

We've been doing it for over 30 years - major fishing trip for the guys most days; the ladies lounge on the beach. It's more like work (in some respects) as we are up anywhere from 4:15 - 5:30 am depending on how far offshore we are heading, and often do not return until 6pm by the time the boat is cleaned and the fish fileted. Normally only a beer or two offshore -- never want to have boat or weather problems and also be buzzed -bad combo. Hit the bevs harder in the evening, unless we have another all-day trip planned to the gulf stream--- always dependent on the conditions of the seas. The goal is fresh fish for dinner every night, ceviche apps etc.... significant quantities of wine and beer go down. On lay days, maybe sleep in till 8:30 and do the beach relaxation thing. Same place for decades -- don't have to figure out much new stuff, so when you pull in you are on vacation instantly. There is also a major backgammon tournament in the house throughout the week. Best week of the year, especially when the seas cooperate.

Love the beach. I just got back from 18 days in Mexico. Cancun for a few days (trash) then Isla Mujeres for 2 weeks (amazing).

I think I'm going back in 2 months for an extended period. There are many cheap options for "digital nomads" traveling throughout Mexico.

Days off were occasionally a blur. Too easy to get drinks brought to you on the beach at 9am. Had to get my shit together when I had to start working. I'm officially sick of Mexican beer.

Wife and I are not beach people. We have visited Ocean City, MD, Virginia Beach, Outer Banks twice, and Myrtle and they have been fine, we just had better times in other cities, locations. We found we had way more fun in Charleston than Myrtle and Norfolk/ Hampton Roads than Virginia Beach.

We also never really go back to the same location, with the one exception being New Orleans. We got married down there, so it is a great reason to go back every few years. But, even then, we do different things each time.

We are more visit bars, music venues, restaurants, such people than just sitting on a beach.

I’m hit or miss on beach vacations. We do live within 10 miles of the beach now so it’s a bit different, but I just can’t do the beach everyday for a week especially if no pool option. Now for 3 days/ 2 nights I can handle that. Wake up, stake out a spot w/ an umbrella, go back inside to eat and get ready and then just lounge/ drink all day.

For those of you in NE Ohio or Columbus, Breeze airways just started and have direct flights to Charleston and Tampa Bay (From Columbus or Canton) for around $150 each, possibly cheaper. It is brand new, and started by the guy who started Jet Blue. I think it’s similar to a spirit type airline, but trying to be a bit nicer.

What was good in Hampton Roads and Norfolk?

Very populated areas from there to the beach.

Anyone have one of these? So GD handy, easy, light and will not buckle in the wind. Our trips to Outer Banks have been overly windy a couple days each time and the $49-$79 umbrellas just fold and break everywhere. This thing needs only 2 mph wind to keep going….under 5 by the ocean is rare.

Downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth isn't bad, with the USS Wisconsin there and a few other ships. Norfolk Tides games have been fun.

Across the bridge tunnel up 64 is Williamsburg, which has a ton of things to do including the historic sites and Busch Gardens.

Did a day trip to Seabrook Island 2 weeks ago and saw a ton of them. Hadn’t seen them before but look pretty handy and really easy to set up.

Weighs 3 lbs lol….surprising shade space size. 3 min set up….and actually fits back in the bag when done.
