The mayor at the beginning of Detroit's economic decline was a Republican named Albert Cobo. His primary motto when he campaigned for election in 1950 was to stop the “Negro invasion” of white neighborhoods. His signature accomplishment in office that he touted was his influence in the freeway constructions in Detroit that almost certainly contributed to the white flight that began during this era.
Many contributing factors with a lot of nuance. That doesn't resonate well with people consumed with party politics who assume every event in the universe can be traced to one of the two political parties in the US (good event = my party; bad event m= your party)
