I'll miss a football game for my kids stuff. But if she wants people to show up and pay attention to her, she should pick a different day.

I agree, my best friend is getting married Masters weekend. When he asked me to be in the wedding back in October he started saying (paraphrasing) "I know it is Masters weekend so I completely understand" yadda yadda yadda, he knows my wife has badges because he went with us back in '06. I stopped him before he continued. Augusta National isn't going anywhere, it will be there next year, and the years thereafter. I'm a huge sports fan but there isn't a single event that would kill me if I missed it.

BTW, our wedding was OSU-Michigan saturday, and more importantly Auburn-Alabama saturday since her maternal family is from Birmingham. I'm pretty sure no one elected not to attend our wedding because they had to watch the games in real time (although to my recollection both games were over before the service).

We have lost perspective in my opinion on where athletic competitions fit in the grand scheme of things.

The things I have missed I don't truly miss.

IMO a lot depends on the nature of the wedding and guests, I'm cognizant of insular communites where most friends/family are local, not that the ceremony is unimportant but it would seem to me to be much easier to put together the locations and time that can be convenient to the group. I grew up in such a community, and often weddings weren't a "big deal."

I'm also cognizant of weddings where 75%+ (at our wedding I'd say 90%) of guests travel significantly and incur a lot of expenses to attend. Such weekends involve a lot of planning and you can't just take out certain weekends because Ohio St. may play Illinois that saturday. There will always be a weekend that inconveniences someone. Either they choose to attend, or not. For us weddings are like mini-vacations. We've only been to one "local" wedding in the last 5 years, but have been to Phoenix, Chicago, Birmingham and Charleston, S.C. in that time period...it isn't just a wedding (again not that the ceremony is unimportant) but is a chance to see and catch up friends that live in areas where it isn't feasible to routinely visit them.

Again, just me but there isn't a sporting event I'd regret missing if there was a wedding of a close friend/relative that same day.

Reminds me of my wife picking a wedding day.

She wanted to get married on Jan 1st, our wedding year happened to be a year OSU was not playing a Jan 1 bowl game so I was ok with it under one condition...

As the years go by, no matter what we are doing for our anniversary (vacation, just a night out, etc) if OSU is playing a bowl game, we will be watching it at a sports bar or wings place.

At first she really didn't understand (not a sports fan at all) and just said "fine, whatever".

Now years later and many bowl games later, she has come to love our yearly anniversary trip that includes a BW3s for the bowl game.


No way I would have allowed the wedding to be during a game as big as OSU/Miami. What's one week up or back?

Heck, my uncle got married when I was in HS, my senior year. He told his then fiancee she better schedule the rehearsal for Thursday night instead of the typical Friday night, because if she made it for Friday night his whole side of the wedding part wouldn't be there. They would be at my HS playoff football game. He even told her he would be at the game and not at the rehearsal if she made it on Friday night.

Needless to say they had the rehearsal Thursday night, i was the only member of the wedding party missing since I had practice.

If kids running up and down a field is more important to you than your friends, you aren't much of a friend.

There are games every week. There are "big games" multiple times each year. Missing one hasn't killed anyone AFAIK.

No one has answered my question yet, why does the woman get to choose the date and it be final, shouldn't both parties agree on a date?????

That's why I love my fiancee so much. When were started talking about dates, she mentioned fall...then she immediately said, "wait a second, I don't want you to have to miss a Notre Dame game...how about summer?"

And that is why we decided on a date in early August.

Like others have said, it shouldn't be solely the bride's decision. Both the bride and groom should find a date that works best for both of them.

This past year I was in Columbus for the USC game while most of my friends were in Pittsburgh for a wedding. Most of my friends left Pittsburgh right after the ceremony and drove back to columbus for the game. The bride was pissed ofcourse, but she knew it was going to happen when she picked that date.

Tell her that you will get married whenever she wants as long she is ok with the fact that everyone (including you) will be watching the game on their iPhones during the ceremony. If she calls your bluff, just tell her like it is. If that day is the only day for the rest of eternity that is available for the wedding, then you will do it, otherwise, she can pick a different random date a year and a half in the future.

i say no.....the woman should get whatever she wants...its her day....most dudes i know including myself are sick they even have to do it lol....just try to push the date as late as possible homie!....but seriously they take it more serious than men do and they should get whatever they want or you can pay for it the rest of your life try that out!

Priorities out of whack? Seems to me the number is larger in agreement that you don't get married during your favorite college teams football games :)!! Look some people are passionate about their college football and that includes me!! College football is 12 - 14 Saturdays a year, there are plenty of other days left to get married on people!!

you only get married once suppossedly....even thou im working on my second....buckeyes play 12 games a year every year....i wish i wouldve tried to watch a game during my wedding.....unless of course it was a steeler game then f that.....just kidding. although i think you can discuss the game why planning....as a groom you should be focused on your wife.....unless its playoffs/bowl game/tyson fight etc....jk

Don't people go on honeymoons after their wedding anymore? Even if you just go for a week, chances are you're missing the NFL game on sunday, the 'next' OSU game and possibly the next NFL game. I had to draft up a hedge-fund like model to give to a friend to handle my fantasy football team after our wedding.

I have been in two weddings during OSU games. 2003 Iowa, I wore an earbud in the ear away from the congregation. Was orginally told no by the bride but her father said you picked the stupid date so deal with it. :D The other was 2007 Illinois. That game didn't start until we hit the reception which I stood by the bar and the 20 inch tv for 3 hours in a tux. I hate fall weddings.

Remember this also. Even if you plan it on a bye week it's not always going to be a bye week. 5 years from now she's going to want you to go antique shopping to celebrate your anniversary while the rest of us will be watching OSU lay the smack down on Oklahoma.
