The money thing is a part of it.I've spent a lot and we are not rich.But he is just sittin here looking at me.I would have never been able to go through with it anyway I have a feeling.How do you kill something that you love?

The problem is you don't throw ur cat against the wall when it pees on the floor. I'm not even a vet and I know to do that.

We had him fixed when he was just a young TiT.I think about 9 months.Can't remember.Somewhere around there.My wife is at work .She would know.I think a little before a year.

Money is always part of it man. At the OSU hospital she sees everything from "he has a slight fracture, easily fixable, it's gonna be about $800" and the owner says "oh just put him down". At OSU they have a good Samaritan policy though and will save anything at their own cost under $1000 and then adopt it out.

On the other hand she has seen "it's going to cost $15,000 to fix your dog" and the owner says "do it"

Basically he is just pissed and stressed and needs the right enviroment. Old Lady Cats are what I call them. I used to have one. He was the only pet in the house, neutered at 7 months, and would just piss everywhere. He would do it right in front of me. Finally I gave up and gave him away to a nice old lady who just wanted to pet him all day long and pay attention to him 24/7. He hasn't had one problem since, none of the problems I had with him.

Look, I love my animals. They are a part of my family. I spend a lot of money on them to keep them healthy, and if and when they do get sick I step up and pay. But their are limits for everyone. Do you spend $1000 on a sick guinea pig? $6000 to fix the dysplasia in your Golden Retreiver's elbows? Your dog gets hit by a car and has internal injuries...they are fixable but there are no guarantees and the operation and after care necesary will be over $1200.
Everyday people have to deal with these decisions for their pets.
It's tough...you love your pets...but they are costing you a lot of money...sadly, if your not wealthy, it becomes a financial decision.

I mean...what are yoiu going to do if you are Snyds vet?.... You've tried a lot of things 'for over a year' ... the bills are piling up and the cat's owner is balking at the $$$. The option to euthanize is out there...what do you do you recommend if they don't want to pay for more treatment

Total alpha male thing. He needs a single old lady household where he will be the only pet and won't have to worry about dominating. I am sure you could put him on Craigslist.

Male cat looking for single pet home, then screen and offer a "trial period".

Before that though I would definitely try the pheromone product that was posted and really give the main spot where he pees a good cleaning, and any other spot that may be "marked" by anyone in the house. Buy 2 or 3 and plug them in the outlets closest to where he pees

Behavior therapy is proper protocol to try 2nd after urinary tract tests, which run about $150. Valium should only be tried after pheromone therapy.

Well great...do it. $150. I'd spend the money...but that's me.
....and if it doesn't work?
I did say 'second opinion'....but in the end it is still going to come down to $$$ and the owner's willingness.

I'm going to call in the morning and cancel.You know i didn't mention it before but he has gone to the bathroom in his litter all day except once today.It's like he knew impending Doom was right around the corner.i really had a war going on in my head about it.I had a dream when i was 18 that i was going to be put to death in three days.It was a dream that has made me oppose the death penalty my whole life.I started to wonder if he knew what was about to happen and if he feels the same way I did in that dream.

I think that's great. I would ask your vet about some of the therapies that have been talked about and get his take on it , and if need be, get another vet's opinion. I think it's great that you feel for your animal enough that you are willing to give it another try and go to the wall for him/her. That is what a good owner does. Euthenasia is always out there as an option, and if it comes to that, at least you know in your own mind that you did everything reasonably possible.

LJ--I have a question. If OSU has a good Samaritan policy why would they fix an animal then adopt it out. Why not give it back to the owner that couldn't afford the $1000.00 in the first place. Now that is a good Samaritan policy but to fix somebody's animal because they couldn't afford the bill then give it to somebody else now that's cruel.

Anyway, where we at on this? Is tit tit still amongst the living? I hope so.

That is very cruel. Figures as it's Ohio State and all. No wonder everyone hates them.

i would hope the owner would have the option to adopt the animal back?!?!?!?!

An owner cannot bring in their own animal as a "Good Samaritan". Sorry, I mixed up my thoughts. Your personally owned animal is just like any other patient. If the owner requests it to be put down they will try to work out a payment plan and such to save it. But just like any vet practice they can't do a lot of things for free.

Just like many other vet practices. Remember we are talking about emergency type stuff here.

My gf was horribly visually shaken up the first time she had this happen

"Hi mr smith. we have examined your dog thoroughly and this is what it's going to cost to fix him"

"oh ok, let me run to the bank and get some cash"

Never to be seen again.

The general practice has write-offs and the emergency dept has a FEW things they can write off. But you have to remember, the vets and hospital admin have very little say in what they can write off. It is a state funded hospital remember. They aren't going to write off a complicated surgery.

Shelter's won't good sam for owners either.

I had a cat that used to crap in my bathroom sink.....wake up in the morning and try to brush your teeth and have that to deal with ......


He got out one day and I haven't seen him since....the new cat is working out well.
