Browns President Mike Holmgren spent almost 15 minutes with host Vic Carucci on the team’s radio show Cleveland Browns Daily on ESPN 850 WKNR Wednesday night, touching on a few timely subjects including the status of quarterback Colt McCoy.
* On an update on how's McCoy health after suffering a concussion that made him miss the last three games of the season:
"I haven't seen him really since they left the week after the season. But I did talk to him at that time and he passed all his tests and he's feeling fine. He has no residual effects from the play. I know no one will work harder this off season than Colt McCoy. So I'm happy we got through all that and he's fine and he appears to be."

Browns President Mike Holmgren spent almost 15 minutes with host Vic Carucci on the team’s radio show "Cleveland Browns Daily" on ESPN 850 WKNR Wednesday night, touching on a few timely subjects, including the hiring of Brad Childress as new offensive coordinator.
Here’s some of Holmgren's quotes from the interview:
* On the hiring of new offensive coordinator Brad Childress:
"Brad’s an outstanding coach and I’ve known him a long time. When I first met him when I just arrived in Green Bay and Brad was on the staff at the University of Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez and he had been friends with Andy Reid, who worked for me. So we knew some people and we became pretty close – that was about 20 years ago.”
* On Childress as the Minnesota Vikings' head coach:
“I thought he did a really great job in Minnesota in an unusual set of circumstances near the end there with some of the things that happened. But he came very close to going to the Super Bowl. He’s an excellent football coach; a very, very bright guy who knows how to coach quarterbacks. He’s a tough guy. He demands a lot. I think it was a great hire for (coach) Pat (Shurmur).”
*On the importance of Childress having previous head coaching experience:
“Pat and Brad worked together in Philadelphia for a long time, so they know each other and trust each other. I think the biggest challenge for a guy whose been a head coach and now he comes back in another role – in this case as an offensive coordinator – the one thing that I ask all those guys is that ‘You’ve been a head coach, are you OK with kind of coming back and doing something else for another head coach?’ In this case, someone that actually – when Brad was the offensive coordinator Pat was a position coach – so they’ve kind of flopped positions. But the guy, he’s a football coach, so he goes, ‘Of course!’ He’s coaching football, he’s part of something we’re trying to build here and he’s excited about that. So, it’s going to be a good thing for Pat.”
* On how helpful it is to have a coordinator who has the same offensive vision:
“Yes, on one hand. But on the other hand, I will say that every coach brings certain uniqueness to the table – and that’s a good thing. I think Pat, when he goes into his offensive meetings, should have the creative juices going and then have different ideas from all the coaches, not just the coordinator. It’s a healthy thing as long as everyone understands that (in the end,) ‘we’re going to do it this way, thank you for your contributions.’”

If they get RG3, Wright, and Mercilus with the 1st 3 picks I'll be very pleased.

I'm really starting to warm to the idea of Nick Perry with the second ast round pick. Then going back and getting a WR like Brian Quick, Joe Adams, etc... in the second round.

Adams and Quick would both be huge reaches in the 2nd round, especially at 37 overall.

It's really hard to tell when the top pass rushers are going to come off of the board. I like Perry, but he only weighs 250. I'm not sure if he's a 4-3 DE.

Small fast pass rushing DEs are perfect for Juron's defensive scheme. Sheard is only 260 lbs.

Gil Brandt thinks Browns can win with Colt McCoy
http://www.cantonrep.com/browns/x1341769442/Gil-Brandt-thinks-Browns-can-win-with-Colt-McCoy?zc_p=1

Personnel guru Gil Brandt thinks Colt McCoy has the horsepower to pull the Browns out of the abyss.

“I’m a Colt McCoy guy,” says Brandt, a former Cowboys architect who for years has been the most recognizable analyst at the NFL Combine. “I think he could run that offense, providing they get enough players around him.

“I just know his background. I know him very well. The guy has leadership qualities. I think you can win with him.”

Brandt made the rounds at the Super Bowl and will be right back in Indianapolis for the Combine, Feb. 22-28 in Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Browns have the biggest stash of high picks, at No. 4, No. 22 and No. 37 overall. One of the biggest curiosities of the draft is whether a team aiming for Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III as its next quarterback would have to trade up to get him.

“I don’t know if you want to go up to No. 2,” said Brandt, whose voice is a fixture on SIRIUS radio. “I don’t even know if you could get to No. 2 with the Browns’ two firsts and throw in a second.”

Sounds expensive.

“It really is,” Brandt said.

Indianapolis is expected to spend the No. 1 pick on Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, even though Colts owner Jim Irsay is making some noise about Griffin.

Brandt likes Griffin, but he seems to think Ryan Tannehill of Texas A&M might be as good an NFL quarterback.

“I really like Tannehill,” Brandt said. “I have a feel for Tannehill. I think he’s going to be pretty good.”

But ...

“You have to ask, if you’re the Browns, are Tannehill or Griffin going to be better for us than Colt?” Brandt said.

Part of the question for Brandt is the price of spending multiple picks to get a quarterback when a good prospect is already on the team, and those picks could be better spent on beefing up other positions.

“That’s the way I would look at it,” Brandt said.

He assumes President Mike Holmgren will lead the Browns along an intelligent path at the Combine and through the draft.

“I think Mike could take chicken manure and make chicken salad,” Brandt said. “He is really good. He’s also pretty good at evaluating quarterbacks.”

Holmgren weighed in lightly this week on McCoy during the team’s in-house radio show. He said McCoy has “no residual effects” from the James Harrison hit that knocked him out of the last three games.

“I know — I KNOW — no one will work harder this offseason than Colt McCoy,” Holmgren said. “I’m happy we got through all that (concussion ordeal), and he’s fine.”

Brandt rates Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon as the third-best player in the draft but does not advocate spending the No. 4 pick on any wide receiver.

“They need a running back,” he said.

The one he likes best is Trent Richardson of national champion Alabama.

“I think Richardson is really great,” Brandt said. “If I’m them, and if Richardson checked out, I probably would move down if I wanted to draft him. He probably would help ’em as much as anybody.

“I also think the back from Miami, (Lamar) Miller, is pretty good, if his shoulder is OK.”

Brandt admits Blackmon is a tempting target and that he is intrigued to see how high he will go.

“I think it all depends on how fast he runs,” Brandt said. “He’s a lot like Michael Irvin. He’s real strong. He’ll catch that slant.”

But ...

“With wide receivers, you’re always going to find one,” Brandt said. “It’s no longer the guy that can run the fastest. It’s the guy that’s gonna catch it coming across the middle.

“There’s a lot of wide receivers every year. Last year, (Doug) Baldwin from Stanford was undrafted. He led the Seahawks in catches and yardage.”

Victor Cruz, undrafted in 2010, racked up 1,536 receiving yards for the eventual Super Bowl champion Giants during the 2011 regular season.

Meanwhile, Brandt thinks the Browns already signed some important help for their offense in Brad Childress.

“I think the new coordinator will help them a lot,” Brandt said. “That’s a good pickup for them.”

Peter King of SI was making the same claim about wanting to see McCoy back with the Browns when the season ended. Outside of the fan base, in the NFL circles there is still a pocket of support for McCoy.

So, in short, Gil Brandt thinks the Browns should draft a RB (Richardson) with their #4 pick. Nice.

Nowhere does it say he wants them to take Richardson with #4

You're trying too hard

Yes it does. If he is ok with McCoy and says not to draft a wr with the 4th pick who is left that he mentions?

Why does the player he wants have to be mentioned?

Oh I forgot Gil Brandt is still involved in drafting players and wouldn't want to show his "hand" in who he really wants so he purposely didn't mention the player he really wants.

Again, you don't actually answer the question. Instead just bounce around it like a true troll.

Why does Brandt have to say the players name? Why can't there just be an assumption that it's a defensive player he wants w/out really caring which one?

Besides, did you even see lhslep's post? He CLEARLY says the only way they should draft Richardson is with a trade down. So I don't know where you're going with this.

I also think the back from Miami, (Lamar) Miller, is pretty good, if his shoulder is OK.
That must mean he wants Miller w/ the #4 pick right?

I mean he said he wants a RB on the team, and he mentions Miller....w/ skyhook logic i'm gonna put 2 and 2 together and assume that's with the #4 pick.

There really is no argument. He clearly says if they want Richardson, they should trade down. It's not that hard to understand.

One he says is "pretty good" and one he says "is really great" But of course you would assume he would pick the pretty good one.

That's not the point. NOWHERE does he say he wants Richardson w/ the #4 pick. It just says he really likes Richardson. And you assume that means he wants them to pick him at #4 (despite him putting in there he only wants the Browns to take him if it's a trade down).

So he also says he likes Miller. Nowhere does it say w/ the #4 pick, but I just assume that's your logic...he likes him, so he must want him at #4
