I think most UC fans realized he was not going to be a lifer at UC. However, they did recognize he had the potential to go down as the man who defined the UC football program in this era if he stuck around for awhile.

Another poster asked how Kelly's departure was mismanaged. There are two ways of looking at this: one, how it was communicated to the fans and the media and how it was communicated to the players. The UC players perception is that Kelly said certain things would happen in a certain manner and obviously they believe it did not occur that way. They are upset. Certainly you or I are not in a postiion to judge them as we were not there in the locker room to see what exactly was said.

Rocket31, Gilyard a bum?? Why so hard on the guy? In my book whether Mardy was a fantastic football player or not he is a winner in my eye's. The dude was living in the backseat of his car in Clifton for nearly a year and working two part time jobs to pay his own way for college. He was able to regain his scholarship and get back on the team. Lot of people would have quit and went back to Florida but he did not give up. Sounds like a solid guy to me.

On ESPN tonight Kelly still wouldn't admit that he was going to be the next coach at ND even though it had already been announced by ND. He even went on to talk about how he expects honesty and integrity from his players, caoches and even himself! WOW alice are you still in wonderland?

Most people knew Kelly would fall all over himself to get that Notre Dame paycheck. It's just the way it is. There are only a few programs that a coach would pretty much never leave voluntarily for another job. Ohio State, Michigan, Florida, Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, and Notre Dame are about it.

I know that everybody has already said he has accepted the job and asked for permission to talk to Sumlin, but crap what did Kelly's interview mean? He basically said nothing has been agreed upon

His interview meant he didn't want to talk about it while he was being recognized as the National Coach of the Year at Cinci, especially since he was still sitting in the ballroom where the UC banquet was held.

Was just listening to Mike n Mike and they brang up a good point. Notre Dame was 1 second away to having to find someone else other than Brian Kelly, who I definitely wanted for the Irish. If the refs dont put that 1 second back on the clock in the Texas game Cincy would most likely be playing for a National Championship and I dont think there is anyway that Kelly leaves Cincy when they are in the Title game. I think the ND booster should be sending those refs and Texas some gifts for this lol.

Anyways Im so pumped about this hire, like I said earlier if we couldnt land Meyer(didnt think this would happen) or Stoops(was crossin my fingers for him) I really wanted to get Kelly. Hopefully he can turn things around for the Irish. Hopefully he can ride that momentum he had at Cincy and bring it with him to South Bend.

BK had one very good season at essentially what most people consider to be a mid - major school. Kinda like one of those "one hit wonders" on VH-1. Let's just call him Mungo Jerry who only had that one hit "In the Summertime" in 1970.

Ya 10-3, 11-3, and 12-0 is only one good season for a coach while going 9-3 vs top 25 while he was at Cincy. :s

Not to mention Cinci hasn't had a 10 win season since 1949, and he did it all 3 years while coaching the Bearcats. The guy simply gets players to play "above" their potential, which is quite welcome in South Bend. Holtz is the last coach who could motivate players like this.

Competition is all relative. He got the leftover kids that Ohio State, ND, and Michigan didn't want...and got them pumped up to win every game they played. Imagine what he could do with some of the best recruits in the country.

It is too bad he didn't wait until after the bowl game. That might have been a pretty good gauge of Kelly/Cincinnati's legitimacy.

I don't think his record should be downplayed. I realize the perception of the Big East, but it is still a fact that for decades Cincy was not competitive at all. Winning is winning to an extent. And when you win at a place that no one else has, it has to mean something.

While I have questioned Notre Dame's hiring approach and some of their self-perceptions, I don't think this is a bad hire. If you aren't going to get Meyer or Stoops (or the like), who are you going to go after? Kelly has as strong a resume as anyone else that might be inclined to leave their school at the moment. When the talk turned briefly to Edsall from Connecticut, they bordered on being a laughingstock. But there are a lot of schools who would take a chance on a guy like Kelly if they happened to be hiring at the moment.

UC fans need to realize what Brian Kelly has, Notre Dame is a much better job and that they were about to get their butts kicked in the Sugar Bowl. Now Brian Kelly leaves unbeaten this season and when UC gets crushed by ND, he can say it's because he wasn't on the sidelines.

Kelly knew he'd never win a NC at Cincy, at least at ND, he's got a chance if he can get the program out of the doldrums it was put in by Davie, Willingham and Weis.

Yea but OSU's schedule that season was tough. Their SOS I believe was top 10-15. Cincy's was the lowest SOS among any BCS bowl team this season.

Let's just wait and see if he can actually put together a defense. Offense has never been ND's problem. They could score a ton of points (just like Cincy). Their problem has always been defense. Let's all hope that Kelly doesn't turn out to be Weis Jr.

While some may disagree, I do feel he's going to have a tougher time recruiting at ND than at Cinci due to the academic standards. My understanding is that there are no "refresher" courses like high school calculus at ND. Incoming freshmen are expected to be able to go right into a college level calculus program. There are probably going to be more kids going to college next year that need that refresher course than not.

While I applaud ND's academic standards, and their firm stance of not "lowering" the bar for incoming students, eventually they may have to amend this stance. I can say from personal experience of working with ND grads that they were all really smart.

BK needs to get the Irish winning and use the mystique of being a ND grad as a selling point in his recruiting. It 's much like the Marine Corps. The vast majority don't join for a job, but for the mystique the Marine Corps has.
