As soon as the decision is made a head coach owes it to his players to inform them before anyone.

Actually he handled it like a classless douche last week also. Going off on reporters rather than just saying "I have interest in the Notre Dame job." Much like Randy Edsall did when he made his interest public. Then I heard (I don't know if its true) that on tonights award show he said he wasn't going to be teh coach at ND.

Kelly will be gone in 4 years so it won't matter anyways and Notre Dame will continue the coaching carousel.

He should have told his players first instead of lying to them at every turn. He even put on his twitter feed this week on tuesday night when in NYC that he wasn't meeting with ND. I guess it would have been different if they were playing Bama in the National Championship game. What would he have told ND "I'm interested but you have to wait until after the game", why couldn't he have done that now. He owes that much to these kids who played their hearts out for him and are as much the reason why he is even getting this opportunity. Go out there and coach this team and then do the deal after the game. UC was told that all they had to do was build him a better facility and he would be glad to stay, that his family loved it and didn't want to leave. They re-worked his contract every year he was here and were going to do it again. There is something wrong with college football when a coach can leave like this but if a player wants to transfer he has to sit out a year.

ND needs to get on recruiting. There is no time to wait for the bowl game. As for your last sentence, I agree. I think if a coach leaves a program for another(not retiring), the players should be allowed to transfer without penalty.

Cincinnati fans weren't bitching about how Kelly left Central Michigan right after saying he was completely happy and focused on their bowl game. I didn't think it was right then when he came over before their bowl game for ours and I never will. No coach should leave before a teams season is over, period.

And to answer your other question I told my previous two employers when I was looking for another job and told them why too.

I did not tell my employees that I was entertaining an offer from another company until after I had gone through the interview process, was offered the job, and officially accepted the offer. To tell them before hand would have been a distraction, and would have ruined the team morale. And if it had fallen through, how could I ever look them in the eye again and ask them to work their hardest for me. They have a new manager now and are doing fine. Life goes on.

Perhaps he did go for the money. It also might have had something to do with striving to be the best. Or the opportunity to test himself with a different, maybe even more difficult challenge. There are a lot of things that drive people and they aren't all evil just because it means moving on when opportunity knocks. There's no guarantee that a job like that, if even only in Brian Kelly's mind, will present itself again.

For whoever said they have told their employers they were leaving, more power to you. Ask the former Boston College coach how that worked out for him. Who knows what would've happened if he had spoken about it and then it didn't work out. Would that have made Cincinnati feel any better? It is easy to call someone out when you haven't lived anything remotely similar to that life.

Aside from that, what would have been the focus the week of the Pitt game if he'd announced he was leaving then. He did all he could to prepare his team for arguably the biggest game in the history of the program, but now he's an asshole for not glory hogging the news and announcing he was thinking about ND. He absolutely did the right thing in that case and probably in a few years when the players get into the real world a little bit, they'll understand why things had to unfold the way they did and that he actually WAS thinking about them given the opportunity in front of them at the time.

And as someone else pointed out, saying, "I love it here" wasn't necessarily a lie. Everyone acts like he completely shit on Cincinnati, but there's a good chance he is dealing with his own contrasting feelings about the decision. It isn't like he said, "Damn yeah, fuck Cincinnati, I'm out the door!" It probably wasn't easy, just like it hasn't been easy for the numerous other coaches who have to consider not only their school and teams, but their own aspirations and *gasp* their own FAMILY.

No, I would have been happy had Kelly been honest about his intentions. He can say he was interested in the job and would listen to offers. That is all that needed to be said.

Exactly. Nobody will bat an eye because nobody expects the head football coach at Cincinnati to be there forever...nobody that is except for Cincinnati fans. No, it probably mattered most to his family. That is his first obligation. Sorry, the players are being just as selfish as what they imply about Kelly.

For the record, I can't stand Notre Dame. I like Cincy, too (not a "fan", per se). It sucks for them and I hope they get someone who can continue to elevate the program. But all the judgment of Kelly's values and decision making is a complete joke.

Rich Rod was a homestate boy. He'd never leave. Kelly was getting all these improvements. He'd never leave. The people who believed this crap were naive and now their pacifier is to lash out and lean on the "it was the way he left" crutch. Bullshit. They are mad because they were wrong and felt more significant than their own reality. It is kind of sad, really.
