You're right. While more hops typically means more ABV, it is not the hops that add the alcohol, but rather extra hops are added to balance out the large amount of fermentables used in the brewing process. Without the hops, high ABV beers would taste overly malty and sweet. Not good.I Wear Pants;1303339 wrote:No. Hops add absolutely nothing to the alcohol content of a beer. That comes from the sugars which come from the grain bill and any other fermentables you add. Hops do not increase the original gravity of a beer.
Again, my mistake, thanks for the correction.

No, of course I'm not a real good person to ask about the weirdness of people being beer nerds since I'm definitely one myself.O-Trap;1303346 wrote:Is it weird that I get happy when someone is this nerdy about beer?

It's important to note that this is the origin of India Pale Ales. Extra hops were added to the ales being shipped to India to act as a preservative as many of the beers were spoiling on the long voyage over (brewing was a much less sterile enterprise in the 19th century).I Wear Pants;1303344 wrote:Hops affect the taste and aroma as well as the head of the beer. It also acts as somewhat of a preservative. But they have zero fermentables. Which is easily seen by the layer of hop "chub" at the bottom of a primary fermenter, if they fermented out then there would be no such deposit.

Indeed, though some other beers were able to make the voyage as well the additional hops certainly were added because of there preservative properties.Mooney44Cards;1303356 wrote:It's important to note that this is the origin of India Pale Ales. While this is by far the most common belief, there are starting to be quite a few people/articles that are now saying otherwise.Mooney44Cards;1303356 wrote:It's important to note that this is the origin of India Pale Ales. I'm on it as well, whit0906. I don't always update it, usually when I want to remember the beer I'm having, but usually that's once or twice a week or so.

Got my greasy BBQ fingers all over the glass. I was excited to see the Oskar Blues stuff at Giant Eagle and picked up a bunch.
Here's the BBQ:

The explanation of the process makes it sound like glorified ice beer.
I'd try it.

I suppose this fits in the beer snob thread.
Buddy sold his extra fridge in his garage. I got a free 12 pack of Yuengling lager out of it.
