Kurt Warner took over when Trent Green went down. He didn't start that season as THE guy.
He was then used a few stop gaps in NYG and Arizona... Only he turned it around in Arizona and had a few really good years.
However, I guess by your definition, Kurt wasn't a franchise QB and St. Louis never stood a chance with him taking over... Since you know, he was a back-up before that.
