Please don't forget that the Big 10's best team didn't represent the Big 10 in 2002 (Oklahoma beat Washington St. while OSU was winning the national title over Miami), in 2006 and 2007 Ohio State was playing in the national title game as well. So out of those 10 years you listed, 3 of them had a team other than the conference #1 and one of those years was no Big Ten rep.
