The best band in Columbus is Grove City. However, I don't know what they are like after the program was discontinued for a year.

At one time, I think Salem had close to 200 kids in the band. There's about 50 now and that's being generous. Some internal problems plus a student population that has been reduced by more than half since I graduated hasn't helped. Hopefully, with the middle school and high school now under one roof, more students will be encouraged to join the band.

Johnstown Johnnies Big Red band. Probably the best kept secret in terms of bands in ohio. They're a D.IV school and have 185 kids in the band, and they know what they're doing. They're modeled after OU's marching band, and went down to play at the Peach bowl last year in Atlanta.

Lakewood's band is awesome too!

Actually, I recall them doing 'Script Ohio' when they came to Campbell just a couple seasons ago. It was when you had that unbelievable kicker that ended up at TSUN.

I remember him trying around a 60 yard FG to end the half and wasn't that far off.

But back to the band, they came on and did the ' Script Ohio' routine and just left everyone amazed. It was incredible.

Solon's band just performed at the Browns/Falcon game, so clearly they're the best band in Ohio

They were actually pretty good and big!!

Indian Creek's band does a script ICHS now. It is really awesome to watch. And a tuba dots the i. This year, that tuba player is also a cheerleader!

I was in the Big Red Band about 10 years ago, and I can tell you that it has gotten very sloppy recently. It makes me sad, since I know what it should be; when I see what it is, it's very depressing.

Wait a minute. Are you actually saying the Big Red band isn't as good as it used to be??? I can't believe what I'm reading.

Holding out, that's exactly what I'm saying. It has all but fallen apart, and it's sad.

Sorry massillon and steuby. Dover had Ohio's first marching band. They dance, swing, have majorettes and a drum major. Big red and the tiger bands are both great though. I remember Cleveland easts band playing dmx in the stands when we played then in 99

Back in the fall of '85 Orrville played Youngstown Rayen in a playoff game in Berea. Rayen's band was very small and about 1/2 of them were drummers. They marched to the beat of the drums and nothing else to a spot right on the fifty yard line near the home crowd and assembled themselves in a formation near the drummers who were in the middle. As my buddy and I were standing along the fence we noticed that the reason they were marching to just the drum beat was that not one of the instruments that were being carried had any mouthpiece on them. They were for show only. Just as we noticed this, the drummers lit it up and the rest of the kids who were carrying the phony instruments put them on the ground and for their entire show they just "got down" out there to the beat of the drummers. When the show was over they picked up their horns and such and marched away.......to this day we still crack up about that.

I admire you for your honesty. Big Red's band is very entertaining and can definitely ignite a crowd! However, they are quite sloppy. They are sloppy in things that only band kids (or former band kids) would notice, so many do not notice. I understand exactly what you are saying and am glad someone out there agrees with me!

I'm a very strange SHS alumna in the sense that I can see things objectively. I can love Big Red until I'm blue in the face, but it doesn't change the fact that there are kids out there not even marking time. I have to admit that they do seem to be making a better effort than they have in years past, but that doesn't make it especially good.

I'm also a teacher, and I can tell you that most kids don't want to be bothered to make an effort. That's where good leadership plays a role -- something SHS has been lacking since Nocera left in the early part of the 2000s. I think that, if they can keep a director for more than 2 years at a time, they might have a chance at pulling it back together.

Yes, they can fire up a crowd, but they're also terribly lazy in a lot of ways. And maybe you're right, Creekloyal -- maybe these are things that only band kids would notice. I have a hard time believing that others don't notice how ridiculous they look, but I'm coming at this from a unique perspective.

They need to pay a good band director good money and keep the band cohesive. The Big Red band is as part of the Big Red team as the football players . I can see a blown assignment on the grid but I guess the band I might find it harder to find mistakes . I do look and see if they are lined up evenly ,but I cant judge from year to year . All I can say is I support the band . Maybe a band forum on www.rollredroll.com might open some eyes and open some constructive discussion .
