My Dad once said it this way to someone who questioned his christian faith... "if you're right and I am wrong I have nothing to lose, however if I'm right and you are wrong you will be condemned to hell"

Each to his own respectfully....I'll stick to my christian faith.

that is perhaps the biggest cop-out possible.

Actually you have plenty to lose, like living an utter lie in reference to pehaps the most important question to humanity and sleeping in on Sunday mornings.

As my last line states each to his own. I believe in this you believe in that and I enjoy waking up on Sunday mornings.

You chose what you believe and I will never argue that. Cop-out??? Just standing behind what I believe, is there anything wrong with that, or am I forced to believe in what you do?

Yeah, but what if he's wrong about which god he's worshipping?

There is no doubt that many people feel a spiritual connection to a God/ unverse/higher power....and that connection helps them find an inner peace. Religion helps people to that goal.

To others it is irrelevant.

Having religion lengthens peoples' lives just like marriage and owning a pet. Look it up.

I'm not sayong you're wrong for your beliefs. But, to believe in something just for the idea that you have nothing to lose if your wrong is such a backward way to look at things and pretty lame, IMO.

And also, the point of religion isn't to lengthen your life and strengthen your marriage. It isn't about what you have to lose or gain. It's about living the TRUTH. Or should be. But it doesn't seem that's the case for some of you. So maybe you should pay better attention at church tomorrow if you believe these things. Just some advice.

I took Bio-Hazzard's example as more of an analogy of one way to respond to someone who questions someone else's Christianity. I doubt his Father bases the reason on why he is a Christian SOLELY if at all on having "nothing to lose". The Bible instructs us to be ready to give your reason's for why you believe.

If lengthening your life is is a by-product of religion, then religion has a positive effect and can be considered a good thing. This is in response to Strapping Young Lad who says people have a lot to lose by believing in a religion which turns out to be untrue.

But how do you determine what truth is?
What is truth to you might not, by definition, be truth to somebody else. Truth is abstract in alot of ways.

"Truth" can be very subjective and a misleading argument in and of itself.

What else?

I'd rather die young than live a long life of lies, for one thing. And truth is what you should seek. Whether you find or whether some objective truth even exists is another matter.

The point of following a religion is that you believe it is THE truth. Plain and simple.

Created by aliens by mixing our genes with apes - who can argue against that??? Not anybody here, that's for sure.

1. Your own links says it predates the Bible by about 2500 years as it was dated at 4000BC and the earliest Torah texts are dated to 1500BC.

2. Your own link hilariously is inaccurate when it states the "pyramids" and "face" on Mars as evidence. Modern technology (telescopes, probes to Mars, etc) have shown the "pyramids" and "face" to be nothing to bad resolution photos with odd shadows from decades old technology.

I'm definitely intrigued/interested in the ancient Sumarian texts, but your link has some hilarious inaccuracies.

I actually haven't had time to read what was linked, but if it really cites the "pyramids" & "face" on Mars then I'm not quite sure it's worth looking into; thanks! LOL!!

I just believe in me.

God is a concept,
By which we can measure,
Our pain,
I'll say it again,
God is a concept,
By which we can measure,
Our pain
,
I don't believe in magic,
I don't believe in I-ching,
I don't believe in bible,
I don't believe in tarot,
I don't believe in Hitler,
I don't believe in Jesus,
I don't believe in Kennedy,
I don't believe in Buddha,
I don't believe in mantra,
I don't believe in Gita,
I don't believe in yoga,
I don't believe in kings,
I don't believe in Elvis,
I don't believe in Zimmerman,
I don't believe in Beatles,
I just believe in me,
Yoko and me,
And that's reality.
The dream is over,
What can I say?
The dream is over,
Yesterday,
I was dreamweaver,
But now I'm reborn,
I was the walrus,
But now I'm John,
And so dear friends,
You just have to carry on,
The dream is over.

Yeah, it was an interesting explanation of the Sumarian texts until I got to the Mars part, that was QUITE hilarious.

My own link? I didn't post a link. Someone posted a link, but it wasn't what I was referencing.
