Just saw that Ohtani is going to be paid $2 million/year over the course of the ten year contract. Then from 2034-43 he’ll make the remaining $68 million a year.
I guess it’s a ton more money to invest in winning now? And figure out the other $680 million later? I’m sure he’s probably set on money by now but it’s hard to imagine any other athlete - or person - saying sure I’ll take $2 million annually for the next ten years when I could have $70 million.

I think he seems like the sort of serious athlete where winning and getting titles is foremost in his mind right now and he has no real issue with deferring the money so that he gets most of it when he's done playing. I also think that being on the worst-run franchise in MLB (seriously, all that money and the Angels have been less successful throughout the career of Mike Trout than the fucking Pirates have been during that 12-year or so span) probably had a big effect on him.
However, I'll also say that everything about this deal and how it is structured is complete and utter bullshit. You have the one sport without a salary cap where the only penalty for spending insane money that smaller market teams can't dream of doing is that the super-rich owners have to pay a luxury tax (that the small market owners will most likely just pocket instead of using on their payrolls), so you have a guy kick nearly everything to way down the line so that you can keep spending and try to create your own All-Star team and do everything possible to rig things in your favor.
The combination of this shit being allowed to go down and his dismissal of Houston's cheating means Manfred is even worse as a commissioner than Bud Fucking Selig ever was. Makes me hope Ohtani flames out even worse than Pujois did as an Angel... Main saving grace is that the Dodgers still have Dave Roberts as their manager, so they aren't winning shit.

I think it’s such bullshit. Cheating without cheating. MLB needs to address this.
