Close! He took the lead in 1964 from someone (Musial retired in 1963)....Mantle took the lead during 64 season and Mays passed him up later in the 1965 season

Eddie Mathews was the active leader for a while from the start of 1964 until the still healthy Mantle passed him.....Mathews and Mantle very similar careers start to finish. Both got old pretty fast and stayed ahead of Mays until 65 and Mays left em and stayed a little ahead of Hank until into the 1972 season

I enjoyed researching this. I didn’t notice it on baseball reference until I was about 1/2 way done and even then it didn’t show when someone new surpassed someone else....just showed the leader at the end of every year.

Nice.  Wee Willie Keeler held it from 1897 to 2003 (206 singles) before Ichiro smashed it in 2004 with 225.
