BTW I wasn't glued to the tv all night, but were the Coen Brothers or any of the actors from a Serous Man shown? Just watched it via Netflix, probably the Coens' most arthousey (for lack of better words) works to date. Definitely was a bit out there. I enjoyed it but can see how many people wouldn't.

While Avatar was good, it was not best picture good. It doesn't go in that realm of movies like Schindler's List, Forrest Gump, Rocky, LOTR, The Departed, and Million Dollar Baby. Making money has nothing to do with the movie being good. Case in point, Pirates of the Caribbean 2, which is 4th all time was not good at all. Star Wars movies each made tons of money but they would certainly never win anything for best picture. Avatar was visually stunning and the effects were incredible. However, the story was not original and has been done numerous other times in movies. I was stunned when it actually was nominated but not stunned at all to see it didn't win.

Will be seeing the Hurt Locker this week I will judge on that then but everyone I know who saw it said it was very good.

A total of 2 of the top ten grossing movies have ever won best picture

I was looking back at previous winners and I think 1994 may have been the best year ever for best pictures nominees

Forrest Gump
The Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Quiz Show
Four Weddings and a Funeral

Except when they're also good.

Being popular means it's good to someone, doesn't have to be you.

Yes it was. The point isn't the comparison of a doc. to a film but rather the attendance figures of movie isn't an indication of quality. That point should be clear.

Avatar was entertaining despite the overdone premise.

You're right, a documentary that was released in like 5 cities is totally on par for a comparison with a worldwide release on a movie that cost 100 times more to make. Pretty fair to compare attendance figures there...

What do you define the "best picture of the year" as?

Because if it's anything but special effects then Avatar wasn't the best picture.

Edit: I guess it could also be ticket sales.

Woah, calm down chief. I understand you're passionate about Avatar because it didn't have many black people in it, but no need to make a bunch of irrational arguments because of it.

Everything that surrounds the film. The plot, the acting, the directing, special effects, music, response, success, etc., etc., etc.

You don't have to be the best in every category to average out to be the best overall.

I'm not comparing that, I'm saying the quality of a film/doc/short whatever isn't dependent on viewership to ensure it's a "quality" production. I tdoesn't matter how many see it. Likewise, a ton of people seeing something doesn't mean it was good.

Why is it that "one persons opinion doesn't mean much" doesn't apply to you?

It does apply to my but my argument is clearly backed up by millions of people. Doesn't the majority rule in this country?

Oh shit...nevermind, I forgot. It doesn't.

Just because a lot of people saw it doesn't mean everyone of those people liked it or thought it was great. It was a good popcorn movie with great effects. The acting was nothing special, nor was the story. You think it was great and you are entitled to that opinion. But don't tell everyone else they are wrong for expressing their opinion of the same film, when it's just that, an opinion.

If the majority ruled Al Gore would have been POTUS.

Millions of people like/love McDonald's. Is it the best food or even a good food?

LOL, seriously?

My grandpa snores louder than anyone I've ever heard, so does that mean he'd win the World Snoring Championship?

That makes as much sense as some of the shit you're coming up with.

Avatar was very average. I actually fell asleep during the boring middle part. I am glad it didn't win. There was not an ounce of originality in the plot whatsoever. It deserved to win all the visual effects awards for sure.

But the storyline was way too basic to the point that it actually made me mad. Plus I can't stand a movie that tries to drive political messages so hard, like Avatar did. I hopefully will never see that movie again.
