He may be the most popular but he's the most popular of the niche fans they have (ie, as mentioned, straight women, gay men). He's not some crossover star which is broadening the boundaries of their sport. He's a good skater who loves being the center of attention.

Saw on HBO his dad was Capt of Football team in HS and his mom was the cliche head cheerleader/homecoming queen. They didn't like being boxed in and told that because of being those things they had to act and behave and live their lives a certain way so when they had kids and it looked like he was going to be batting for the other team so to speak, they encouraged him to just be himself.

Great for them. If only more people were like that. Seen way too many kids not supported in that way, and have their lives essentially ruined as a result. Or at least impossible to live as one should for quite some time.

From someone who probably can't stand on skates I wouldn't expect any less. As someone that played hockey, I wish I could skate as well as them (as do some NHL players I am sure)

Some of these ppl. here are pretty thick. It's fine if you don't want to watch men prancing in tights. That doesn't make you narrow minded. I don't watch men's FS either (girl's is a different story).

However, to go out of your way to start a thread just to call him queer, is not only stating the obvious and therefore very pointless, but also makes you look like a bigot.

Figure skating is the only sport in the world where you can be gay and nobody cares. Johnny Weir has yet to learn that.

I'll watch hockey, or nearly any other sport on television. However I just have never got the appeal of watching figure skating

Is what they do impressive and/or athletic? Yes.

Is watching a guy wearing skin tight spandex dancing and skating to a Beyonce song something that I want to watch? No.

I guess you are a more refined individual who enjoys the finer things in life and I am just a stupid neanderthal

I cannot bring myself to watch Men's Figure Skating... Especially this guy. I'm surprised he doesn't melt the ice with all those flames emitting from him.

However, If someone portrayed the whole Chazz Michael Michaels thing from Blades Of Glory, I think I would like Men's figure skating a little more lol

I didn't go out of my way to start this thread to let everyone in on the obvious, I started the thread as an example of how a queer that flaunts it gets picked on. If I see a queer that flaunts their lifestyle it pisses me off because it's not necessary and any other lifestyle should not be flaunted. I'm just not into figure skating. I could care less who's doing it. Chicks, dudes, chicks who like dudes, dudes who like dudes, chicks who like chicks, Roseanne....it simply doesn't appeal to me as a sport.

I suppose I can appreciate the skill behind it, though.

Let me correct myself, a person is subject to ridicule for the lifestyle they choose and that includes any lifestyle. The ridicule can be greater if you establish an arrogance about it, whether gay, redneck, a rich person who assumes they're better because they have money, and the list goes on and on. Simply put, if you flaunt it you deserve that stereotype.
