Aside from a football Saturday against a big opponent, I can't think of much worse....

One of my close friends is getting married next winter. He just got engaged over Xmas and his controlling fiance is moving fast, very fast.

He's one of those friends where most likely I'd do whatever I could to make the wedding, but I'm on the fence here.

Location is Columbus, Ohio. The date December 30th, 2016. A FRIDAY.

People take off work/travel for the holidays, then you gotta get off the following Friday for this fuckers wedding.

I usually take a few vacation days to spend Xmas with the fam. So do I take the week off after Xmas, waste vacation days in Ohio? Fuck no. Fly back for the wedding after just being in Ohio 5 days prior? Doubtful.

What would you do? I'm heavily leaning towards not going.

If someone isn't worth some amount of inconvenience to my schedule, I'd reconsider what constitutes a "close friend".

I wouldn't go.

But if he's a close friend, is there a chance he asks you to be in the wedding? Because it's pretty easy to say that you can't make the wedding when you're a guest. It's a lot harder to tell someone you can't be in their wedding when they ask.

I'm not going to be in it.

This is totally the bride's doing, trying to save a buck.

He already irked me a week after he got engaged. I got a text asking if I would be bringing a +1, because they are "trying to keep it slim"...whatever the fuck that means. I'm seeing someone, but I'm sure as shit not at the stage where I can commit to bringing her to a wedding a year away.

Being out of state, I'd send a card and wish them well. If she is that controlling and inconsiderate to have a wedding on that day, then I doubt you'll see much of this close friend after the marriage.

If the date doesn't work for you, then don't go. When someone sets a date like that, they have to realize that it may be impossible or very inconvenient for some people to go. It doesn't sound like you are going to miss the 'wedding of the year'. The decision that you have to make very simply, is...whether or not you will be happier going even if it is inconvenient, or not. They made their decision on what works for them, now you must do the same. If you decide not to go, and you value your relationship with your friend, just send him an extra nice/generous gift, (since you won't be spending any money to attend), along with regrets that you cannot attend on that date. You do not have to give a reason.

My step-sister in law got married on New Years Eve in 2011 when it was on a Saturday Night and she played all Disney songs during dinner in conjunction with the entire Disney themed wedding...

The worst.

I don't mind Friday weddings. It's nice waking up on Saturday and still having the weekend to relax, etc. I do think that actual date makes it tough because of the holidays, so don't go if you don't want to go.

We actually have a similar brouhaha going on in my wife's family. Her nephew, who is in the military, is getting married to a girl who lives in Virginia, and they are having the wedding there.
The wedding is on a Saturday, but it does require a long drive or taking a fight, spending 2 nites in a hotel, and taking a day off from work. Mrs.Hits and I are going along with our daughter who is still in college....the three of us are flying. Even though I'm using some airline miles, the cost to go will be over $1K including gift. That's not a big deal for us, but a lot of my wife's family is balking at going, which has upset the parents of the groom, as well as my wife. SMH. I try to talk reason, but to little avail. :(

My wife and I got married on Y2K...January 1st 2000 which was a Saturday.

We even had candles ready in case there really was some power outages.

We picked the date and were NOT going to be upset if someone didn't come due to it being on a holiday.

If it bothers you, don't go. It's pretty simple.

New Year's Eve weddings can be fantastic if they go past midnite, ....and being a Disneyphile I wouldn't mind Disney themed dinner music. You just have to make sure you have a good party going on afterward...and yes...must have alcohol. DRY weddings are the worst.

That's a tough situation. One family is going to have to travel no matter what. If the couple lives in (or plans to live in VA after they are married, it makes sense to get married there. It's much easier to plan a wedding where you live.

Every situation is different for each couple and their guests. I don't see what is actually so horrible about that date. Most people will already be off work, and if they are having it in a "hometown" many friends could already be in the area for the holidays.

Now, I had a cousin get married two weeks before Christmas. To me, that was worse because so many people are already going to be travelling right after it. I didn't go because it would have required me to fly home twice in a three week period.

I had a friend schedule an afternoon wedding the day after the 2002 Fiesta Bowl (won by Ohio State over Miami for the NC). This was back in my drinking days. I had intended to attend the wedding. However when I awoke at 11:30 am on that Saturday, I was in no condition for a wedding or anything else. I skipped and didn't even tell anyone I was going to - real jackass move on my part. That said, he had no right to force his wedding into my NC bender.

I wouldn't go if it doesn't work out. When you schedule a wedding date you can't be delusional to think your grand plan is going to work out for everyone else. Friday weddings are a joke unless they are on holidays.

I have three rules for my wedding if I get married.

1. Not in the winter.
2. No religious affiliation
3. Not during football season.

Answering the title question differently than it was intended:

Went to a wedding with this girl who refused to have fun. Wouldn't drink. Wouldn't dance. Was mad at me when I did. Pouting about something or other. Wasn't a GF or anything, I just invited her because I thought it'd be fun. Boy, was I wrong. I still enjoyed myself, but she tried to make me feel bad.

This is pretty much mine except I would add:

4. No poor people

The last wedding I went to I met a girl there and we started drinking, dancing, ended up making out, etc. As we are making out she all of a sudden gets a shocked look on her face and says "Oh shit, I have a boyfriend" and runs away crying.

Ended up banging one of the bridesmaids instead who was not as hot but whatever.
