Good pick-ups. If you're going to have a lot of draft picks to use, might as well use the later picks to pick up what amount to starters already. Hitting the lotto with 4th/5th round picks happens rarely.

So you are stating because of 3 players over the last 7 years have been Pro Bowlers from Ohio schools, you should focus more on this region? Seriously?Writerbuckeye wrote:Did I say you stop scouting elsewhere?Keebler wrote: Scouting in the 50's and 60's isn't a fair comparison to scouting today. The talent is everywhere now. I don't think you set your primary focus on a certain region. You look at all the talent you are interested in. PERIOD. Teams are equipped with tons of scouts and coaches that they can cover everywhere.
No.
I meant you protect your own backyard -- which historically has produced some pretty damn fine football players.
Even in the past few years, teams have found an Antonio Gates and a Pierre Garcon, just to name two. Then you have Joshua Cribbs. That's three pro bowl or near pro bowl level players who were within spitting distance of the Browns.
There have been a few others in recent years that ended up going to other teams, but the names escape me now.
Over 1500 players have been drafted in those 7 years and you are basing your opinion on the results of 3 of them?
I love Antonio Gates and Josh Cribbs just as much as the next guy. I still believe Garcon is a system receiver. Put him somewhere besides Indy and you won't hear anything about him.

As for the Philly trade, absolutely amazing! Great deal by the Brownies! This pretty much nulls the Haden pick now.

Thats exactly what I thought. So what do we do? If Berrys available I feel we have to take him but I have no idea where we're going to go with this pick now.Keebler wrote: As for the Philly trade, absolutely amazing! Great deal by the Brownies! This pretty much nulls the Haden pick now.

Good trade and, yeah, that pretty much knocks Haden out of the picture. I see safety as our #1 proirity now.

There is no doubt in my mind that if Berry is available at #7, he will be a Brownie. If he isn't available, this leaves the Browns with a ton of options. I think you could see them trade down with a team like San Francisco that has 2 first round picks. I think the Browns want to ultimately get 2 2nd round picks somehow. 1 of those 2 picks would be used to draft their future franchise QB in McCoy or Tebow.lhslep134 wrote:Thats exactly what I thought. Another thing that popped in my mind, they could trade down in the first and still have the potential of grabbing Earl Thomas or Taylor Mays. I'd prefer Thomas over Mays but I think Mays has potential also.

Does it really knock Haden out of the picture? If you can't trade down (and Berry isn't there) why not have three all but lockdown corners to work with in your defense? If you get any kind of pressure at all, you shut down a team's passing game. Period. If you have to pick at 7, and Berry is gone, then I'd still take Haden.
I won't be upset if the Browns can find a partner and trade down, providing they can get a decent safety (like Thomas) a bit later, or if they are trying to work out a way to take a QB they want in the second or third rounds.
But don't count out Haden yet.

Thomas is a good player because he can cover like a CB or in the slot yet still play free safety.
I'd rather the Steelers take Thomas than Haden at No. 18 to be honest. If they wanted a DB.

Do you think they could possibly move Wright on draft day if they do draft Haden?

I think this set the Browns up to draft Best Player Available at #7 and I don't think with Berry gone at #7 that Haden would be the BPA. I could see a team in desperate need of a CB calling to swap picks. Haden would definitely had some depth at CB but do you want to spend top 10 money on a 3rd CB? He isn't going to start over Brown or Wright.Writerbuckeye wrote: Does it really knock Haden out of the picture? Top 2 Scenarios
1) Draft Berry at #7
2) Trade down and grab Thomas in the top 15.

I don't think they would move Wright at all. Brown and Wright are going to be the starting CB's. If Haden is available, I don't think they take him even if Berry is off the board. I think Berry is #1 best case scenario for the Browns. If he isn't available, try to get a better deal out of the pick and grab another pick.hangonsloopy wrote: Do you think they could possibly move Wright on draft day if they do draft Haden?

Just something that popped into my head. I agree that trading down is the best thing to do if Berry is gone. Getting a mid to late teens pick and an extra 2nd would be great.Keebler wrote:I don't think they would move Wright at all. Brown and Wright are going to be the starting CB's. I don't know if they could get an extra 2nd but I would guess that is the asking price. Mostly likely, they will probably get another 3rd. BUT another 3rd could equal another 2nd. This puts the Browns back at 3 3rd. They could package 2 3rds for a 2nd and get that extra 2nd they really want.hangonsloopy wrote:Just something that popped into my head. we could draft a OL to fill up our right side

I don't think trading up would be worth it. Wait and see who falls to you, you'll either get:
DT: Suh, McCoy
S: Berry
OL: Okung, Bulaga, etc (i've seen 3 different other OT as possible top ten picks)
QB: Bradford
Which would not fill a need?

The OT's would be nice but that's a lot of money to pay a RT, who doesn't really have any experience at that spot.

I don't think this precludes Haden at all. Brown is 31 years old, and for a cornerback that is nearing the end of their useful shelf life. He helps immediately, but the position long term is still far from solved. [/align]

Yeah, I'd rather see them trade down than pick a tackle at #7.Keebler wrote:That was my initial thought also.HighRoller74 wrote: The OT's would be nice but that's a lot of money to pay a RT, who doesn't really have any experience at that spot.

I think Berry is the man, but if he is gone....I fear that we will be trading back like last year.

Kinda my thoughts. Trade down and grab Iupati to start at RG. Your O-Line would be:pkebker wrote: we could draft a OL to fill up our right side
LT-Thomas
LG-Steinbach
C-Mack
RG-Iupati
RT-Pashos
NICE! You could use one of those later rounders to grab a tackle to groom as Pashos replacement and as depth.

That would be a good move. Maybe the 49ers could get stuck on Stupid and trade the 2 1sts, for Clevelands 1st, and a couple later rounders.BR1986FB wrote:Kinda my thoughts. Trade down and grab Iupati to start at RG. Your O-Line would be:pkebker wrote: we could draft a OL to fill up our right side

Highly doubtful. But with this draft should be quite a few teams willing to move down.
