I just saw someone walk into my work wearing a letter jacket for choir. Are you fucking serious? Next thing the AV and Chess Clubs will have one. This coming from someone who never had one nor wanted one. Seriously, everyone is going to have one before you know it.

I got 5 letters floating around my moms house. No jacket to put them on.
I was of the belief that I wouldn't wear it much after school, so it wasn't worth the money to me, and my parents would NEVER pay for it.

Yeah...to earn a letter you must sing in 1/2 of all performance notes.
THe defense is a bitch in choir.
Those damn moms about 20 years ago making sure little Timmy got his 4th place trophy while playing on the "C" all-star team....and it just blew up from there.

Neither did you if you didn't realize that sentences start with a capital letter.

I'm all for giving them for athletes, and I can even understand giving them for cheerleading.
What I could never understand them for was band and choir

This is the society we live in now.
Kid comes out for football and pays the play to participate fee and thinks that guarantees him playing time.
Kid signs up for little league, doesn't win a game, still thinks he should get a trophy.
What a crock of shit

I loved my letter jacket. warmest and and most comfortable thing ever. Have considered getting one for college(play two sports) just because the damn things are awesome, but I guess I don't want to be the trend setter.

I liked mine too. You got a sense of pride when you wore it. Unfortunately, once I got something that was worth putting on it(league and district championship patch) it was May and I was graduating and its not cool to wear anymore

Wow - the opinions of poster really surprise me at times!
Here is my take:
Football, basketball, baseball & any other sport, along with band, choir, etc. = EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY
I was in school a very long time ago (30+ years) and earned JV and varsity letters in the sports I played and earned a BAND letter participating in band and I proudly wore all of them on my jacket, along with all the pins, etc. received. The letters were all styled differently, sport specific w/small JV ltr & large varsity letter, and band specific which was a similar letter to the varisty one, but with a music symbol on it. This was earned after two years in band.
While not physically as tough as playing a sport, band took just as much, if not more, time than I ever had to put into playing a sport ... of course, this was sports 30 years ago too ...lol.
While I am a firm believer in anything being earned, if a school decides to recognize an individual in some manner such as giving them a letter for participation, I'm all for it.

Never said I played football. And, I'll give a big no thank you to the cookie ... I may comment on a post you make but I will not accept anything from an individual who "speaks" like you do.

Look, kids need to start realizing in HS (hell, before that) that you don't get rewarded for everything that you do in life. Not everyone should get a letter for everything. not everyone gets a bonus at their job every year; not everyone gets to win a championship. The sooner people drop this sense of entitlement across our country, the better off we'll all be.
My thought has always been if you don't win a championship the season is a failure. There are no moral victories. Being a varsity letterwinner wouldn't mean a whole lot to me if my team went 0-10....

So basically schools should only give varsity letters to sports team athletes that win championships?
How is playing a varsity sport any different really than being in the band?
I do agree anything should be earned and not just given out ... and it is up to the school to decide what they want to give out. But to say only varsity letters for sports are the ONLY thing a school should give out is, IMO, ridiculous.
