Even in your feeble mind what possible correlation does the Teo GF story (which I love by the way...) have with Fuck State U cheating their way into the playoffs? What if ND loses to AZ St or USC? Since we now know ND actually won the game last week, in that scenario no way should Fuck State U be considered playoff caliber.

Here's the report: http://advancingrefor.staging.wpengi...NAL-REPORT.pdf

There's a ton in there. But some highlights:

Between 1993 and 2011, Crowder and Nyang’oro developed and ran a “shadow curriculum” within the AFAM Department that provided students with academically flawed instruction through the offering of “paper classes.” These were classes that involved no interaction with a faculty member, required no class attendance or course work other than a single paper, and resulted in consistently high grades that Crowder awarded without reading the papers or otherwise evaluating their true quality.

A good number of these student-athletes were “steered” to the AFAM paper classes by certain academic counselors in ASPSA. This steering was most prevalent among the counselors for the revenue sports of football and men’s basketball. While some of these counselors knew only that these were easy classes, others were fully aware that there was no faculty involvement and that Crowder was managing the whole course and grading the papers. Those counselors saw these paper classes as “GPA boosters” and steered players into them largely in order to help them maintain their GPAs and their eligibility under the NCAA and Chapel Hill eligibility rules. At least two of those counselors went so far as to suggest what grades Crowder should award to their players who were taking her paper classes.

ASPSA made tutors available to all student-athletes, and those tutors often helped the student-athletes with their paper-class papers. While most conducted themselves appropriately, several of the tutors crossed the line between permissible and impermissible assistance and drafted parts of the papers that the student-athletes submitted for credit in these classes.

Like many universities, the Chapel Hill administration took a loose, decentralized approach to management of its departments and department chairpersons, on the theory that strong management in the college environment unduly constrains the academic independence that fosters creative instruction and research. As a result of this approach, the University failed to conduct any meaningful oversight of the AFAM Department and ASPSA, and Crowder’s paper class scheme was allowed to operate within one of the nation’s premier academic institutions for almost two decades.

We found no evidence that the higher levels of the University tried in any way to obscure the facts or the magnitude of this situation. To the extent there were times of delay or equivocation in their response to this controversy, we largely attribute that to insufficient appreciation of the scale of the problem, an understandable lack of experience with this sort of institutional crisis and some lingering disbelief that such misconduct could have occurred at Chapel Hill.

My personal favorite:

A total of 2,152 individual students who enrolled in the paper classes were included in this impact analysis. Of that number, 329 students (including 169 student-athletes) had at least one semester in which the grade they received in their paper class either pushed or kept their GPA above 2.0. In other words, for at least one semester in their college career, each of those students had an actual cumulative GPA above a 2.0 but a recalculated GPA (excluding the paper class grade(s)) below a 2.0. This number includes 123 football players, 15 men’s basketball players, eight women’s basketball players, and 26 Olympic sport athletes. Of that number, we identified 81 students who earned degrees from Chapel Hill whose recalculated final GPA excluding the grade(s) from their paper class or classes was less than the 2.0 required to graduate.
If these classes were open to all students, then there shouldn't be any NCAA violations.

It was roughly a 50/50 split of athletes and non that were enrolled in the classes

Regardless, I think the school is going to get crushed by the NCAA.

What do you mean by "publicized"? While I didn't go to UNC, at Ohio, all students got a course book quarterly which has all the classes that were being taught during the next quarter, what time they're being held and what professor is teaching it. So I knew every class I could possibly take, some of which were essentially "piece of cake" classes (great for those times when my folks were getting pissed at my "fuck studying" grades...take one of those and get a 3+ GPA for that quarter).

With UNC, from what I read, the problem is less that athletes took classes like that and more along the lines of how it was encouraged for athletes to take them to the point it was essentially advertised to coaches and athletic personnel that they could go there and not study/pay attention/do work and still be given eligibility-worthy grades.

Sounds like UNC is moving to the SEC so they don't have to worry about academics anymore.

Unfortunately there are 2 murky truths in major college football.

#1 the B1G is arguably the weakest conference of the "Power 5" conferences. And #2, no one in the sports media and few followers of Division 1 college football outside the state of Ohio have any love for the Buckeyes.

The 2 TD loss to a mediocre VT team in The Shoe will loom large with the playoff selection folks even if the Buckeyes steamroll their way through the balance of this season.

I would like to believe that if Ohio State wins the B1G convincingly there would be a legit case for putting the Buckeyes in one of the playoff spots. But it's going to take that and some upsets over the next few weeks to put the Buckeyes in one of those slots.

What I suspect will happen is Ohio State will win the B1G championship and have to settle for a Fiesta Bowl appearance while 2 $EC schools make a playoff run. Then we'll all be gnashing teeth and crying "shoulda, woulda, coulda" on January 12th.

If the Bucks convincingly run the table I think the committee will realize the loss was a frosh soph team in its second ever game together that is way better now....jk. They will realize how much $$$$$$$$$ a possible two bowl games from the largest alumni base in the country will bring in and pick OSU. Because it's all about money not a true champion. If it was there would be a playoff representing all conf champs

Disagree with both truths. The first one is ridiculous; the B1G at worst is a top 2 conference. The second truth will be forgotten with a freshman QB in the early season. Lucky for the buckeyes that we lose early.

However, if we aren't in the championship playoff, I'm okay with it. I'm not okay with 2 mediocre SEC teams making it, which it seems like everyone outside of Miss St is mediocre. Alabama would finish 8th in the B1G.

Everyone wants to talk about what the SEC West is doing, and how the division's only non-SECWest Loss is Arkansas losing to Georgia (SEC East). I get so tired of hearing this and how GREAT the SEC is and how teams in the SEC West have beaten all these GREAT teams. Let's take a closer look at all these "great teams" the SEC West has beaten up on...

The #1 team in the SEC West division at the moment is Ole Miss (4-0 in the Conference, 7-0 Overall). Here's Ole Miss's W's...

Boise State (5-2)... Sorry, but that program isn't quite the same now that Chris Petersen is gone.
Louisiana-Lafayette (4-3)... Who?
Memphis (3-3)... This isn't basketball; this is football.

The #2 team in the SEC West division is Mississippi State (3-0, 6-0). Here's Miss. St's W's...

Southern Miss (3-4)... Who?
UAB (4-3)... Who?
South Alabama (4-2)... Who?

The #3 team in the SEC West is Alabama (3-1, 6-1). Here's Alabama's W's...

West Virginia (5-2)... 1st legit W and it came 7 games/teams in...
Florida Atlantic (3-4)... Who?
Southern Miss (3-4)... Who?

The #4 team in the SEC West is Auburn (2-1, 5-1). Here's Auburn's W's...

San Jose State (3-3)... Who?
Kansas State (5-1)... 2nd legit W and it came 11 games/teams in...
Louisiana Tech (4-3)... Who?

The #5 team in the SEC West is LSU (2-2, 6-2). Here's LSU's W's...

Wisconsin (4-2)... 3rd legit W, but let's not forget Wisconsin was UP 24-7 in the 3Q! LSU didn't win it; Wisconsin lost it!
Sam Houston State (3-4)... Who?
Louisiana-Monroe (3-3)... Who?
New Mexico State (2-6)... Who?

The #6 team in the SEC West is Texas A&M (2-3, 5-3). Here's A&M's W's...

Lamar (5-3)... WHO?!
Rice (3-3)... Who?
SMU (0-6)... Who?

The last place team in the SEC West is Arkansas (3-4, 0-4) (LOL @ Bert). Here's Arkansas' W's...

Nicholls State (0-8)... WHO?!
Texas Tech (3-4)... Yeah this is a Power 5 school, but Texas Tech is nothing special.
N. Illinois (5-2)... Nice MAC win.

So everyone wants to talk about the SEC (especially the SEC West)'s dominance, but COME ON people!!!! They're not beating anyone other than THEMSELVES! And If we want to jump all over their nuts for beating each other and saying 'Oh look at how great/strong the SEC is', then you can't say the Big Ten, or any other conference for that matter, is 'Weak' because "their only good Wins come from beating other Big Ten teams!" It's the SAME THING that's going on in the SEC!

I agree with the general premise of this post however you could do that for any team in D1. The SEC West is largely overrated; however I think Miss St would finish in the top 4 in the B1G. But yeah, its a self-fulfilling prophecy since they just start every SEC team high in the rankings and they don't drop if they lose and jump highly if they win.

I agree with this. The OOC schedules for nearly all of the teams in the major conferences is pretty much shit. But the SEC in general greatly benefits from extremely high preseason rankings...which is pretty much bullshit.

Minnesota (6-1, 3-0)
Eastern Illinois (2-5) – Who?
Middle Tennessee (5-3) – Ok team
San Jose State (3-3) – Who? (You’re words not mine)

Nebraska (6-1, 2-1)
Florida Atlantic (3-4) – Who?
McNeese State (4-2) – Who?
Fresno State (3-5) – Not a good team
Miami (5-3) – Best win for B1G so far again it’s again an average team from the ACC (Who pretty much every Big 10 fan says is easily the worst power 5 conference)

Iowa (5-2, 2-1)
Northern Iowa (3-4) – Who?
Ball State (2-5) – Who?
Iowa State (2-5) – Not a good team
Pitt (4-3) – Another win against an average ACC team

Wisconsin (4-2, 1-1)
Western Illinois (3-5) – Who?
Bowling Green (5-3) – Decent MAC team… unless you’re Classy then you think they are the best.
South Florida (3-4) – Not a good team

^I think the point isn't that the big ten has great OOC games/wins. It's that basically the same can be said for every conference yet the SEC gets a pass on their cupcake schedule because of how "brutal" the conference is, even though that's just media hype.

I'd say the conference is better than others but I do agree that they are overhyped.
