It's relevant if their SOS was significantly tougher and they beat them head to head.

If you win a division at 8-7-1 and the other teams in your division for example are 8-8, 8-8 and 6-10.....mixed with play the 3 other division winners in your conference from the prior year and then you are paired up against the toughest division in the other conference. You might get a division like vs Indy, vs Tenn, @Hou and @Jack........on the flip side you might get a division like vs SF, vs Seattle, @Zona, @St Louis... That could easily be a two game difference right there.....mixed in with 3 other tougher games as maybe the 12 win team was like KC and played the prior year's 4th place teams.

As for Mulva's hope

I would be for the better record WC hosing the division winner IF

*they finished 3 games better in the final standings

Or....if they finished 2 games better and won a head to head against them

Or ....if they finished 2 games ahead and had a better SOS
