moving away from Christianity and monotheism really helps ones chances of finding logically sound positions to take up camp. we can say without a doubt that the bible was written by man, and really has no modern use than for that of historical significance. however, we cannot say that god does not exist, in one of the literally infinite ways a 'god' could be conceived.
the successful arguments that i have seen put forth by academic theists posit that "god" interacted with our universe at one of three points.
1) God puts the Big Bang/Big Crunch/Membrane collision into action that leads to the expansion of our universe.
2) God enables organic life to form from non-organic materials (and thus, starting evolution. not exactly "creating every animal")
3) God infuses the soul into humanity.
these arguments are successful, because these are areas of science in which we cannot currently posit a comprehensive theory which will hold up to physical experimentation (mostly still in the sphere of the theoretical physicist/astronomer/philosopher)
i do not foresee any of these issues, yet unresolved, to require a supernatural explanation. as usual, these God of Gaps are intellectual place-holders for future discovery.
so far this thread has basically gone nowhere, although the discussion has been fun. in all seriousness, theists and atheists alike should check out the book by athiest philosopher Daniel Dennet and world renowned catholic philsopher Alvin Plantiga titled
Science and Religion. It covers everything that we have tried to debate here, and more, in a much more cogent and thought out way.
